It doesn't sound crazy, there is no replacement for displacement. I built a 'shee for trail use, everyone scoffed at the thought. With some parts from trinity, a 2-1 pipe, and some 30mm plus carbs and it was a true creature. Second one I did was just ported oem jugs and the compression bumped considerably, pro circuit pipes, stock carbs rejetted and a Swiss cheese air box. That one was my favorite...oh how I miss those days

I've got a 2002 Yamaha Kodiak 400 4x4 in Realtree Camo (YFM 400 version...only year Yamaha put a racing piston in the Kodiak line). It'll get up and go, and will climb a tree if you can get a tire on it. Never had any problems with it whatsoever.

I can not vote in the poll because I have no idea, but I can tell you I own a 1983 2 wheel drive Honda Fourtrax that has only needed tires (they got old) simple tune ups, oil and filter changes (amsoil) its whole life until last year when I had to rebuild the carb (the gaskets finally got old!) and put on a new air filter (parts still available). Runs better than ever, I will keep running it until it dies, pretty sure I will die first!

I hate to disagree but I do believe it is impossible for you to own a 1983 Fourtrax. They came out as 1984 models and were a 200cc unit. It was the 200E engine and 10 speed tranny in a 4 wheel (2wd) unit. For model year 1985 they changed the engine to 250cc and dropped the 10 speed tranny BIG MISTAKE

Let me look at my repair manual and get back to you, I think it is 250cc so maybe 1985?? I know it is not a 10 speed tranny! Yep, mine has 4 wheels and 2wd, looks like they took the three wheeler and made it into a 4 wheeler!

Just looked at my insurance card and sure enough it says 1985!! Off by two years, it is 32 years old and lives under a good ATV cover outside in northern Minnesota, not even in a shed and it just keeps going, even the battery (a good gel battery) lasts a long time and once warmed up it kick starts easy. Put Sea Foam in it every late fall for the winter. Sometimes needs a squirt of Starter fluid on the air cleaner for the first start of the year though.

In MN if your ATV gets past 25 years old you are not even required to license it anymore.

In Illinois I have never heard of a license. How the hell do you have to license a machine taht is not allowed on the road?

My mention of the 10 speed was about as clear as Mississippi mud. Many of the early Honda units had a high and low gear box which essential gave them a 8 or 10 speed. In practicality it did not. It was not like a 2 speed axle in a truck. In 1982 Honda started the work ATV market with the 200E three wheeler. It had a 5 speed with a high low but NO reverse. The H/L shifter was not easily accessible. In 1983 they changed the paint scheme a bit and added a reverse but still keep the high and low. The H/L/R shifter was easily accessible on the left side. In 1984 they used that engine/tranny to build the first work four wheeler the Fourtrax 200. In 1985 they upped it to 250cc and eliminated the H/L and added a more user friendly reverse system that continued to possibly present day

In Illinois you cannot ride on any public road. That is not to say it does not occur all the time. I will never buy a license/tax for something the state say s is illegal

In MN you are not supposed to ride them on roads but you still need to Get them licensed, maybe registered is a better word and you have to have a little license plate, probably so LE can track you down.

You know when you study the repair manual those things have a million parts in them, good thing they do not break! I think using good wet clutch compatible oil and changing it and the filter regularly accounts for the longevity in mine.
