I think a well ported strong saw should be close to stock with mpg.
Maybe better than stock in some cases
There making more power but there also way more efficient at making that power.
Flatten the intake and square it up and she'll use gas.

Tend to agree with you there Jason. People have the mis conception that if a saw does not run for the same length of time, that is is being wasteful. But if you cut as much (or more) wood in less time with the same amount of fuel, it is a Win Win! Productivity should never be overlooked.

Definitely agree Jason!! As the efficiency goes up..cph (chips per hour)...also go up. Mad drink a little more fuel...but more work is done.

A couple weekends before, I got another load and used the 066 and a 395. Went through almost a full gallon for the same amount of wood. Was cutting maple/alder/myrtle though.

The fallers here running ported 660's and 661's say they notice no difference in mpg

I gave my 044 a good workout today, I have owned it since new in Dec 1992, it is not ported (but is modded) and was running a 28" bar often fully buried in Red Oak and Pig Nut Hickory. Running full comp RSL chain, and will post some pics after my phone charges. Forgive my prejudice, but I don't think there are many better 70 cc saws out there.

Also did some stumping with my Dr Al ported 460 running a 36" bar with RSLH. The saw ran well, but I hate stumping, especially when the stump exceeds your bar length. I always seem to cut one side slightly higher or lower than the other, no matter how hard I try not to!

Left portions of each log to mill, and the rest will be next year's fire wood!
Got you a 2071 here with the same mods as yours minus timing.

Last load I got with my 044...I was very impressed with the amount I could cut on a tank. Went through 1 1/2 tanks for this load...16x8 trailer

My stock 10mm 044 pretty much gets two tanks per cord. My 038 mad & 12mm got the same. My 026 gets worse mpg as it has to run much longer per cut, like 3 X as long or more. Even though it has a smaller tank, you have the added time loss of more frequent refills. 090's get the worst fuel economy I've ever experienced in a saw, where 125's do surprisingly very well cutting the same wood. Better than an 880 for sure. I'm guessing rpm's vs work done vs cubes are the main consideration.

I called my stock 371 i had the stihl silencer :)

That summnabeach was fast.

Ive probably had 12-15 044/440s...they didnt have it compared to that 371.
This one surprised me big time. I think it could take some other saw's lunch money. Just a gasket delete and a 1" pipe outlet muffler mod.

I think that's the one I ported for him. These saws are impressive. Just wish they were a little more solid feeling with longer bars.

Not sure why, but I prefer a 365 over a 372, just feels better to me.

Do the stiffer springs make a noticeable difference like the R springs did on the 441

Sent from my non internal combustion device.
