If a double gasket doesn't work out, what about machining a thicker riser base plate?

Im gonna see where the double gasket gets me. It will allow me to back into where squish actually was.

Then I could pull some out of the band. Dont want compression too high.

Could also drop it more and go 288 slug.

This saw cost me $1300 all in. If there were 5 usable OEM parts on the saw, excluding SOME of the fasteners, I'd be lucky.

How far do you need to go to be in the 288 "window?".... Not much I'd bet. After you get things close and reset the quench you might be there.

Decided to build the 340 as a 346! Ordered an OEM cylinder kit, base gasket and new chain today from HL Supply.. cylinder kit was a deal of the day for $89.99! Base gasket and chain got me free shipping! Was over at ParagonBuilder's today testing a couple of saws and he had a riser which he gave me too. Hopefully in the next couple weeks the build will start. Started a sticker wall in my shop as well!

Great project and you are in good hands.
there are a number things to watch for to successfully complete that build.
@Onan18 I believe knows some of the problems to look for.

From the top of my memory.
you need to make sure the impulse is clear.
you have to clearance the ribs on the pto side case to get the cylinder to set down.
the screws were mentioned
upgrade to a 372 style intake clamp
by a new clutch drum that will allow an upgrade to a rim sprocket.
use a muffler bracket from a 346 and use loctite on the muffler bolts or ultimate copper on the muffler gasket and get some on the threads.

If you start a build thread some of the experienced guys may chime in with tips.

that will be a great saw when you are done.

It will work you cut off the flywheel side of the brace then slide the pto side under the bumper spike. I can show you a picture later today when I get home.

I've done several of these but this is the first time I've had a failure..they tend to do better with a muffler mod and some put the 044, 046 carb on them. I usually just remove the limiters on the 029 carb adj. screws and it seems good enough...

IIRC I removed limiters, gave it a timing advance and muff mod. Was the Huztl kit P+C. It ran OK, but I was not impressed, I guess it went to the right home, he likes it!

Al, good to see you finally working on that saw … I know you put it off for a good long time.

I still remember the pic of me holding it at the GTG, in pink with the Unicorn, which seemed to piss him off (if it's any consolation).

The Unicorn with 13.5 thou off to true up base, which still left a small ear. It’s a head slapper, and not by a little.

Was probably sent to me with a squish of less than 10.

I hate that you were treated like that by JMS, but it is great to know that you are the COMPLETE opposite to deal with. FWIW I’m all for the 288 slug...every squeal needs a little husky in them.

You should get a medal for your efforts here.
Personally speaking if it were me, I would toss it in the metal recycling bin and call it a loss just to save myself the aggravation, save the five parts and few fasteners and move on.

Anyone ever seen this before.
Looks like the spur is off as well as the crank end .
Adjusted with it just on the bottom of the bar.

Rotating the chain so the spur turns 180.

Then rotating the crank 180 .
