Got a 281 on the bench a friend was having triyble starting. Saw was given to him. When i got it home i could see it was flooded to death. Easy fix.
Figured i would pull the muffler just to inspect tge piston and found this. Cylinder has same size chunk in it.

Poor little Homelite XL, oiling issues reported by owner, replaced bad lines to oil tank, which was empty. Pressurized it after adding oil and it oiled fine. Checked fuel line while it was all apart and fuel tank had just 2 stroke oil in it. Someones storage attempt? Going to see if he wants to go the extra mile and let me rebuild the carburetor and install an electronic module in it to make it a good reliable runner. Piston and cylinder is like new, I'm guessing that's the second chain that saw has ever seen.

have you experience problems with the 518?

Mike, do you plan to use it as sealent when you go gasket less?

Not really, but it is so picky about oil contaminants that I worry about it.

The Dirko is heavier, and less picky.

When removing the base gasket and going with sealant does anyone groove the jug with a 1/8 or smaller ball deburrer to help with sealing

I have not, but that is a damn good idea.

I did a gasket delete on a 272 the other day. Still using Threebond 1194. Guessing since 2007 or so.
Just like my oil why switch when you find something that works.

Heck I have used it to seal metal oil and fuel tanks and alky nitro dont phase it.

Used it for sealing crankcase halves with no gasket.

I stopped using it because of the way it squeezes out into transfers. The Dirko will do the same, but I think I can use less.

If your squeezing into transfers your using to much JMO.

Cliff Helsel uses this stuff on his hotsaws and stock appearing saw builds. I would say he wouldnt use it if it was blocking his transfers in anyway. ;)

I see your point Randy, I use aceton to wash the area and I use less oil inside the jug before I mount things together nowadays compared to how I did before.
Most people thought 518 was gold and never read through the manual.
