There is also a reed valve that cannot be reversed because it is not symmetrical

Looks like a stuffer to reduce cold air volume and direct the flow for a proper scavenge loop. The reed probably provides too much duration without it.
The channels are in front of the plate on both sides / I wonder if there is something under this plate / I can't unscrew it

Might you be able to use a bore scope looking in through the plug hole or intake / exhaust to see what might be at the cylinder bore at that area?

It's easier to remove the cylinder 😉 I don't have an endoscope. I think you need to do this to see if there is any coal

Also possible they deleted the strato for some reason. Maybe there’s an emissions version or similar motor.

That's my guess. Cheaper than coming up with another cylinder.

Just got crank seals, o ring, KS cylinder, and new ring installed on this 288xp. I have a new OEM low top cover coming in the mail. I’ll be into this one for less than $200. Except for the tank/handle, it will have all brand new plastics and clutch cover. I might just get a tank…IMG_0419.jpeg

This guy is worth watching, see how clean the parts he puts together are. There is no sheet metal in the intake, although the catalog shows it 👍😎
