Buddy's 394 back on the bench. I got it to pass vac/pressure with new crank seals. Took it out and made about 2 cuts before it ran away again. PTO side seal is all chewed up against the crank. No visible rough spots or barbs on the crank. Bearing is tight with no play. What should I be looking for while I wait for new seals from HL supply?
The depth of that seal is key.

New piece of Hookie ope.

1982 homey Super Wiz 66 gear drive. Second to last year this saw was made. Got it to pop on mix down the carb. Need to get the recoil to catch better. Also made a list of throttle/governor parts as it's been Mickey moused with in the past and I want to reinstall the governor so I don't blow it up.

Just received a Stihl MS290 back from customer who I installed a 390 kit for. He says it ran for a tankful then on the second tankful it quit and wouldn't start again. I checked it and although the piston and rings look new it appears to have little compression. It doesn't have a compression release so I'm guessing right now that the rings got hot and maybe they weakened. I had this happen a couple of times on Dolmar 5100 saws but not on Stihls until maybe now. If that's it I have a new set of Cabers ready to go...I also just bought a heat shield for behind the muffler ..

Just a thought... maybe it’s missing the washer that goes on before the worm gear

The right depth is just flush, right?

Amazingly, it does have the washer. The clutch was on so tight, I'm not sure it has ever been off.

I did the same thing recently. The seal needs to go slightly past flush and over the lip on the crank. It will make sense when you get the old seal out. If you don't have any seal tools the soda can trick works.
