Good News + Bad News today!
First thing I did (when they opened at 9:00) was go to the post office to PU the 460 tank holder that I've been waiting a month and a half for, but they did not deliver it yesterday cause I was not home to sign for it. Well, I get home and unwrap it, and it is a 440, not a 460, and I had made sure their picture was a 460 before I ordered it!!!
So, I have ordered 460 tank holder 5 times, and have 2 460 tank holders and 3 440 tank holders. The only two that were correct is one that I ordered with the plastics, and it was already in the States, and the other one I ordered from Huztl (through ebay). They, at least, seem to know the difference.
So after I sent out some blistering emails, and ordered 2 more 460 tank holders (with a warning not to send 440s) I resumed my Asian 660 project. (These tank holders are in the States, and should arrive in a week and a half).
I was real surprised they must have made a mistake and gave me a real OEM Stihl 7 pin chain sprocket! Must have been a shortage of Asian parts!
The chain brake setup on the 660 kits is so much nicer than the 440 kits, but the chain adjusters are worse! At least on the 440s, if you use a different chain adjuster it just fits and works. On the 660s, the cases are not right in this area and I have had to shim things in the past. Well, no shims this time, but this is what I ended up doing (after trying numerous combinations with and w/o shims).
Used the large adjusting gear that came with it, along with the small gear and bar mover from HL Supply. Also, had to remove the bottom section of the nylon piece, as there was just no room for it. Did not want to do that … but it works!!!
When replacing the cord on the recoil with a Stihl Elastostart, could not get the cord to go through the hole, so I drilled the hole a bit larger and pinched the cord with thin needlenose plies.
I tried to remove the rotor on the recoil, but even my little impact would not do it, and I snapped the head off of my Irwin T-27. Luckily, I had purchased 6 of em, so no biggie.
Also, I put the top cover on, only to realize that I could not put the plug in w/o opening up the bottom of the plug hole. Done so many 440s lately, I forgot I had to do that on the 660s.
All these stupid little things take up so much extra time, the day was gone before I knew it. Had one little 4 mm bolt left over, don't think I missed anything, hope they just gave me an extra.
She popped on the 4th pull, which I thought was real good for a dry carb/saw, but took a few more to start, fast idle does not seem to work. Did not have any real big wood I could get to, but in some medium size Beech and Oak it felt strong, so I hope I'm going to like this one. Will be doing a lot of cutting tomorrow at a family wood cutting get together (across the river). Will get to test and compare a lot of my recent builds!
