I bought a Husky 181 the other day for next to nothing.
A mate is picking it up and I wont get my mits on it till May but I am wondering if its a saw worth tinkering with or just cleaning up and flipping?

Port it Tony! If you liked the way that 268 ran you are going to love that saw. That series is awesome 181-281-HOORAY 288!
Ok will do
I am a fan of 70 to 90cc saws
Anything smaller I find a waste of time in the hardwood here. They just struggle.
My 044 is my small saw.
Out of all the huskies I have ran I liked the older ones that were pre spring AV, and yes, I really liked the 268, and so does the bloke who bought it!
The 181 is a running saw and only cost me $90 so I will get a new chain cover for it and give it a full rebuild to freshen it up before making is go a bit harder
Which cylinder you using of the 4? I'm guessing the 2nd from the left.
Thank you Dustin.
This jug came in at 102/122/75 after the base and band cut. Them's are some great starting numbers.
This is why I believe that MS440 with the machine work and little to no port work will be right on the tails of a fully ported 044/440. You want the Hemi Non-D chamber for this mod.
The jug above is fully ported, of course.
The hemi chambered jugs off of 440's seem to need less drop to get favorable squish and compression than the D chambered jugs. The timing comes out really nicely.Al, your post is confusing me, there are no non D 044/440s. Did you mean 046/460s???
Ah I was close. lol!I'm using the one on the far left.
It mates to a non-stock piston for some R&D.
they finally figure out all you can do is blow off a saw ?Currently nothing! Woohoo!
I charge extra for thatthey finally figure out all you can do is blow off a saw ?
And change a spark plug. lolthey finally figure out all you can do is blow off a saw ?
I feel your pain. That damn washer with the recessed area. What were they thinking. I had one that took me a solid hour.Tough to work on saws when they have multiple problems and your time is so darn limited (15 min here, 15 there, etc). But, I got one of the 460s finished today, started and idled and reeved/responded well. Needed a dog, broken bolt fixed, chain catch, sprocket replaced, limiters pulled, muff modded, clutch bearing lubed and drum cleaned, new clutch washer and clip, and clutch cover & bar bolts ... IT'S DONE!!!!
Need to finish up one more 460 that runs well but needs nonsense stuff, then pull apart the crushed saw and see if anything is still good!
I've done dozens of em w/o any problem, but I can't get the clip out of the clutch on that darn 460, and the sprocket needs to be replaced! Driving me crazy! I usually use a screw driver to remove the clip, but the washer on this one is preventing it from coming out. Any tips anyone has would be appreciated!
And we are getting snow on top of snow for the first time this year, my gosh, it almost feels like winter!
