MS440 back together. New Meteor Piston w/Caber rings, reclaimed old cylinder by removing transfer(very small amount), .028" squish, port matched and polished. Dual outlet muffler and HD2 Air filtration system, Walbro HD17A rebuilt w/ K10-HD kit. All new seals, lines, pickup, filters, drum, bearing, sprocket and such. Large clutch cover with extra dog and a little bit of personalization for its new owner.
This saw can now enjoy retirement from tree care professional daily work, to nice easy life as an occasional use firewood saw.

Now after seeing Panteliss's bench, I think I better clean and organize mine, or burn the whole shop down and start over. Napalm anyone?

I use these guys for most of the barings I need for the farm. They have been great! I just call or email with a part number and they cross reference and find something. The best thing is there prices have been about half of the dealer. You can ask for a certain brand also.

First I made a template on the computer and printed it off. Cut it out where I could tape it where I wanted it with masking tape. Then took a fresh razor knife and cut into the paint following the pattern. Now with an outline to follow, I used my cable drive with a small diamond V bit to go around and make an edge up to the scored line. Then put a rounded diamond cutter in and did the middle parts in between. Then a small artists brush with some clear on it and it's done. You didn't think I'd leave ya hanging, did you?
This isn't something I normally do, but this saw is for my friends son. So time did not matter, as I basically am doing this for cost.

I wonder if a metal edging machine or a EDM machine can help more avoid all this procedure with carbides , dremels etc etc

Not sure what those machines are, but it sounds good. Not even sure if this is even going to be a thing for me, that was the first one I ever did. Maybe I'll do another and see.

Are you checking timing without a wheel? If so can you go into a little detail on how you do it. I would like to learn how.
there is a timing wheel on the 242, @David Young had a nice thread about linear measurement, both ways is what I will do :)

will do, W2 jug has far less port bewel compared to W1

I can measure some I have here, I have 238 42 special 242 and 246 jugs.
if I remember the flywheel side transfer is higher. and the port numbers are really low.

Did you got the same con rod lenght as I got David?
133/234/238, 53.5 mm
242, 56.0 mm

Another question since you have one 246, do you also have the 246 crankcase?

I bought a parts 238 that will be here friday, I think I have another 238 jug kicking around too.
I don't have a 246 case and a 246 piston will not work in a 242 case with out trimming the case so there is a difference.

Those 238 has the same bearing as you find in 242, 133 had plastic cage PTO bearing.

I got one 42 special year 94 week 31,
43.5mm is the opening in the crankhouse so it wont take an 246 piston since they are 44mm, I would think one 246 crankcase has to be around 45.5-46mm.
I wonder if they had two different crankcases, even their IPL only show one.
