Rod cap on one of the connecting rods in the gearbox came loose and the needle bearings jammed it...

Everything else is in pretty good shape considering, I will try to get some measurements of the needles and see if I can find anything close enough to work.

That is the one. I had envisioned broken gears and heavy internal damage but it looks like all I will need to come up with are some small needles for the one connecting rod. I will try to get some rough dimensions today and answer back.

I'm hoping there is a small needle bearing or two out there that have similar size needles that I can scavenge in order to put this on back together.

As a last ditch effort you could cut the shank of an appropriate sized drill bit to use as a needle roller. My grandpa showed me how to do that when we lost a needle for a u-joint on his old grain truck. No guarantee how long it will last though.

My new best friend Woodwackr made this available to me.
Very cool, what year is that one from? I was looking at it and was thinking that looks a lot like my Reed-Prentice...then I saw the tag on your saw...lol. Mine is not nearly in as good of shape as it sat out in someone's yard for years.

Reed Prentice.jpg

I got it most of the way apart, need to make a jig to get the flywheel off and need to source a pull handle, muffler and the fuel and b/c oil cap. I have been able to get through all of the rust enough to get the throttle to move and the oiler pumping again. I like how it has actual copper tubing and fittings for the fuel and oiler systems. It still needs quite a bit of cleanup. What oil did you/are you going to use in the gear box? Mine just had sludge in it, so I could not tell...lol

Slowly working at getting the chain flexible again, so far have about half of it freed up.

hacskaroly - looks like the Craftsman saw by Reed Prentice. See Mike Acres site for more details.

According to the IPL (thanks to Modified Mark) there are 43 loose needles on that connecting rod. Best I can determine that are about 0.043" diameter, hard to tell for certain as they were damaged prior to the saw jamming up.

Must be from the stone age for cutting petrified wood having that much gear reduction on 100cc's.
1947-1948 time frame...here is a Sears advert from 1948. This saw was only $385.00...updated for inflation, in today's world, it would be $5,042.77. Makes a MS 881 or a Husky 3120 look like a bargin!! (You will have to forgive Craftsman/Sears, they call a chainsaw bar "blade")

Wow $385?? I just looked up average cost of car in 1947 and got $1864. This is a Craftsman, how much was a Stihl in 1947?

I think I have about $300 into it all said and done.
Very nice. I'm a fan of the 44 and 46.
