That cylinder looks like it would clean up okay, why's it getting binned?Well heres the 039 in a box. One bearing is bad. Will need top end, bearings and seals. Probably fuel line and carb kit too. Since it was free it might make a cheap saw. Will try an aftermarket top and oem carm kit and fuel line.

Those were my thoughts too. That cylinder looks like it would clean up okay, why's it getting binned?
I'm learnin. They are not like the pro saws ... tougher to clean up an open port cylinder and the AM stuff seems to work just as well on them.
I thought it may clean up too. Gonna try sometime and see. Thats how I got it yesterday in a pile of parts. I think it will make a good summer project but I have 2 saws apart now that need to be finished up to make room on my bench so i can go through it all. That cylinder looks like it would clean up okay, why's it getting binned?
I was wondering about how the open port cylinder would clean up. Looks like a pain but may give it a try. I can get aftermarket for about 150. Topend bearings and seals. Thats the dukes kit. Anybody try them yet? Ther not the cheapest but not the most expensive either. They are not like the pro saws ... tougher to clean up an open port cylinder and the AM stuff seems to work just as well on them.
You won’t know until you try, but I think it’ll clean up all right. I would degrease it with carb cleaner and remove all I could with muriatic acid first. But that’s just me. I don’t like sanding anymore than I have toI was wondering about how the open port cylinder would clean up. Looks like a pain but may give it a try. I can get aftermarket for about 150. I have never used muratic acid befor. How do you do it?You won’t know until you try, but I think it’ll clean up all right. I would degrease it with carb cleaner and remove all I could with muriatic acid first. But that’s just me. I don’t like sanding anymore than I have to
Dip a Qtip in some acid and dab it on the transfer. Let it sit for a little bit. It'll start to bubble and such. Then dab the spots with a qtip and the end of the qtip should be turning black. That's the aluminum being dissolved. I usually do small spots at a time as to not have acid running into the ports and all up in the squish band. Then after I feel I removed the transfer and verify none of the plating was comprised from the scoring, I finish with a 400 grit scotchbrite hone I made.I have never used muratic acid befor. How do you do it?

I dump about a quarter of a teaspoon into the cap and then dab it onto the aluminum with a Q-tip. When it quits fizzing, smear on some more. Wash it out with water and dry it, and then sand a little bit on it. If there are still dark spots, degrease it again and dab some more acid on it.I have never used muratic acid befor.
