Did a little tinkering with the Ryobi, recoil repaired (added a turn of preload to the spring) pulled the old carb off and tossed it in my junk carb bucket. Cleaned air box, air filter and carb base. New purge bulb installed. Carb will be here Sunday.

Loaded up tool bag for 2 service calls. First I have to install the new brake spring and a new plug in the Poulan Pro 11/30 snowblower I did a week ago. Second is to check out the Gator I did the valve job on a couple of months ago, customer says after warm up it runs rough and the exhaust is stinky. Hopefully it's something simple.

Had a hard seltzer and a cigar while relaxing. Need to warm up my fridge in the shop a little as I noticed a couple of frozen beers.

So assuming that i can get all the transfer off the cylinder walls , would anyone use this cylinder with a new piston?
Its gonna have a dent or two obviously but my ProMac800 has some also and runs very strong.
Yeah piston is no good. Just looking for some recommendations or experiences with running a cylinder that has taken a beating.

From the looks of it I’d clean it up, slap in a new oem slug and rings and run it. Just be sure to figure out what caused the melt down in the first place and fix that as well.

Did you "clean" that cyl before taking pics?
Cyl looks really good compared to the slug!!

If you can't clean it up I think I have a slant fin cylinder in the stash to sell!

I would not hesitate to use that cylinder, I really like the KS 044 jugs!

Likely the replacement slug will not have the nice stabilizers like the original.

I'm guessing it is a fairly early 10 mm with a SN in the low 120s???

Thanks for all the replies guys , this must be a well liked saw.
I picked it up after work at my local saw shop for 175.00 . The shop just got it on trade and the original owner lent it out to his son inlaw.
Its over all in good condition with all the parts (a rarity for me) and I was eyeing a nice one there about a month ago for 500.00. With some elbow grease I think it'll be a good saw.

It's a great find. I believe you will like the saw. If you don't well, there is always guys like me waiting in the wings.
I'm just across the border, but I don't mind driving to pick it up, even if you have it in a box. I've bought plenty of saws in boxes. :D

Either way we should talk about a "rebel gtg" complete with Heritage flags! Haha just kidding.
But I have talked to management in the capital about a GTG at one of our state parks.
How far are you from Strom thruman or Hartwell lake?

Thinking of rebuilding my old starter from earlier this week. - all that's wrong with it is the throw out. Motor still turns strong.

But I'm stuck between rebuilding or giving it to a local rebuild shop for a core payment and just buying another gear drive online to keep on shelf. Cause I'm not feeling lifting this no lie 50lb monstrosity back into the truck. Especially since I had to cut one of my 0 welding cables to extend the battery cables a foot.

Based on your pics I think you will be able to use that cylinder and never know it is not perfect.

With a muff mod, BGD and a timing advance (.020 off the key) these things generally run real well even w/o port work.

Thanks for posting the SN, my "guess" was based on it just having one + on the cylinder, later models had multiple + signs.

Based on the pic of the handle it looks to me like a low hour saw that was taken care of (until lent out). Changing the seals is a good idea, but if the bearings seem good I would not split the case.

Also, it has been my experience, that if the saw has not been used hard the Stihl rubber seems to last a long time. They used good stuff!

Good luck with the rebuild and I think you will be happy with the results. Of my 16 saws only 2 are not ported, and one of them is my 10 mm 044! (The other one is the Cross jug 066 in the HL Supply video).

Meteor is generally a VG choice, but there was some concern with the 10 mm 044 pistons (expressed by Adirondack Stihl).

Don't know if the issue has been resolved, and many ran just fine with them, but I think there was an issue with the side to side play in the upper rod bearing.

Unfortunately, OEM pistons are costly.

I would contact Mark (Cobby08) if you need one.
