Im calling on the pros. My dad said he was using his mower(running fine) then shut it off and now it wont start. Just out of nowhere. Heres the thing, when u go to start it, it back fires almost instantly. It sounds like some sort of sensor to me maybe? Im guessing electrical or a fuel issue? Literally have not messed with it yet. But dads the guy that rolls it out by the road and im the guy that likes fixing things. Just seems like it should be simple. TIA fellas! :DView attachment 254251

Is it a Briggs?
Pull the valve cover and look/feel the valve lash.
Check the aluminum pushrod on the intake, it will bend or wear at the valve guide then bend over.
Nikki carbs will go bad and flood the motor.

Check the basics.

The Johnson 35 that I worked on a week ago came back, but for an unrelated issue. It was running along fine and just died and would not restart. Pulled the flywheel and found the stator loose and damaged, flywheel was damaged too. Pulled the stator plate and flywheel off the 25 I got the exhaust tuner off of and once it was all back together it started right up.

So would a stuck or bent valve be worth fixing on this motor? Ive never messed with a lawnmower like this. Im guessing its an '06 or '02? View attachment 254262View attachment 254263

Those Briggs Inteks are stupid easy to work on. Parts are relatively cheap too.

^ what he said. I've seen that aluminum pushrod wear through on almost every one ive been into. They used a steel pushrod on one valve and an aluminum pushrod on the other. I replace the aluminum pushrod with another steel one when they go bad.

Head gaskets are also a common issue with those engines.

The Nikki carbs were junk, they are jetted super lean and you cant rejet them. The Walbros were decent. Both of them are known for the needle and seat leaking and filling the crankcase with gas while the engine sits.

This morning at work I extracted a rock from the jet pump on a SeaDoo jet boat, then got another boat done and started prepping a sold used boat. Got home and put a new carb on the 3500 watt Chinese generator dropped off to me last weekend. Ended up having a bad needle and seat. Also found a solution for float bowl gaskets on the smaller Chinese Honda clone engines.

Just picked up this old red lever 036 and it came with a brand new Oregon power match bar and chain for $250. Probably could have gotten it a little cheaper but I knew the owner and this saw has been WELL taken care ofView attachment 254710

What’s the deal with the color of the lever?

Red works better?

DeWalt 3000 psi pressure washer. Came in for not running. Found stopped up main jet in the carb. Ultrasonic cleaned the carb and replaced the bowl gasket. Tested with water this morning and it ran great. A bit of a pain in the butt to remove the carb, frame stopped the carb from being able to be slid off the studs so I double nutted the studs and removed them.

Another machine with valve problems. 2nd engine with valve problems this week. 6500 watt Generac Mega Force with 1426.4 hours. Ran out of fuel and would not restart. Massive compression loss through the exhaust valve. I think it dropped the exhaust valve seat. Gonna pull the head off and see what the damage is.

First engine this week with valve problems was a Briggs Intek 23 with a missing exhaust push rod and bent intake push rod. Waiting for push rods and a valve cover gasket. Gonna put the push rods in, adjust the valves and see what happens.
