Finished up this Craftsman yard vacuum. Originally came in for a no start. Had no compression due to stuck open intake valve, had no spark due to kill wire grounding out on blower shroud. Had badly corroded carb as well.

Freed up valve, bead blasted head, reassembled with new gasket. Put heat shrink on kill wire that was grounding out. Installed new carb. Runs nicely. Tested this evening after work. Pressure washed, changed oil and plug.

In the next couple of days I have 2 FS85 trimmers, an Echo trimmer and an 036 Pro to work on.

And I don't need a commercial mower for my house. That's why I'm going with the Toro.

Will keep a watch at homedep for fall clearance and customer returns on sale. Bought a rider one fall for about 55% of original price. Return and on sale. Aug and September are months to watch.

My Meteor MS440 pistons came in today, and I compared one of them to a OEM 044 12 mm piston if anyone is interested.

The OEM piston w/rings and wrist pin is 3.3oz, the Meteor is 3.4 oz. Both wrist pins are the same size and were 0.5 oz.

The OEM piston had straight skirts, the Meteor has wings (stabilizers), which I prefer, but they make it harder to get an accurate measurement, but I did the best I could.

Both pistons have the same total height - 1.555 and the same width at the bottom of the skirt - 1.966, so my OEM piston is still good!

OEM Ex skirt is 1.342 wide, Meteor is 1.351 (measured under the wing).

OEM intake skirt is 1.338, Meteor is 1.345 (measured above the wing).

I plan to use the Meteor slug with a OEM 440 jug on an Asian frame and see how well I can get it to run.

036 Pro that was dropped off for a hard starting concern..I don't think that the fuel line should be rock hard. Broke off in my hand trying to get filter out of tank. Getting impulse hose as well.

FS85 wouldn't prime, have a carb on the way.

Echo hasn't run in a while, have a carb kit on the way.

Is it me, or does that seem like an unusual amount of carbon for a test run. You’d think the engineers would use better oil than ultra. LOL

Oh crap, wrong thread
Rich,

The few Stihls I’ve opened up which were NOS had what appeared to be Moly based assembly lube inside them. They were mostly older models that had never been run. I was quite surprised to see this thick grey/green thick opaque oily substance on everything inside. The newer types did all have some carbon in them, and I didn’t find the same amount of assembly lube inside.

Is it possible that Stihl didn’t start test firing saws until a certain point in time? I’m wondering if the carbon is just from the burning off of assembly lube and not the mix itself.

Also got the side cover for this saw back from Shaun Carr after a fabulous repair welding up my stupidness. I’ll be more careful where I poke my bar in the future. Going to get some paint matched up for it tomorrow.

A pic of the Red Oak bench that went to my Daughter's last week, and a pic of the little Chestnut Oak bench we re-finished on Monday.

All 3 Grandkids helped. The boys (11 + 13) helped with the sanding, using a belt sander, and my 5 year old Granddaughter brushed away the sawdust with a dust pan brush.

We stripped off the Semi Transparent stain that did not reveal much wood grain and replaced it with Spar Urethane. I think it looks much better!

My other Daughter visited on Father's day, and now she wants a bench too, so I'm working on this Hickory one and it is kicking my A$$!

It has very unique live edge, which I'm trying to preserve, and sanding Hickory by hand is an exercise in frustration, even with 60 grit paper!

Since others have asked before, this is how I do a half round leg on a flat bench. (the bench is up side down in the pics).

Shaun does about the best work running. He's fixed a lot of stuff for me.
