It depends on the designs. Most newer saws gain less than older models. The manufacturers figured out a lot of stuff over the years.

When a saw gets ported, we are just trading certain traits away for others. We sacrifice noise, fuel economy, emissions, and/or reliability for more power. If anyone thinks they can beat the Billion dollar OEM manufacturers at their own game from their basement they are certainly fools.

I’ve only done one 620 and the guy is pretty happy with it. I found it needed better air filtration and a gutted muffler with a larger factory opening to not be held back. Ran pretty well and had a good low end for a saw of it’s size.

I only got around 6HP I'm guessing from 590's and 620's, which is on par with a good port job. The really hot builds on any saw make more than 0.1HP/cc. Saws ported to have a forgiving torquey low end don't feel impressive at all even though they may be plenty fast.

Yep. Not always about the timer.

You’re comparing one of the strongest saws in the mid-60s weight class to one the groggiest. Echo’s make solid torque but correspondingly cut slower because they don’t have jack for chain speed. Certainly not when compared to something like your MS-400C.

I barely hace a clue, and ported a 661C and an 044 that blow the doors off of their respective stock versions, and those were just your “average joe” build without machine work or any way to modify the upper transfers. (Timing advance, muffler, intake port, and exhaust port.) Saws built by pros will gain even more.

Three general things about porting saws:

1. The difference becomes more obvious when you fit a longer bar and sink the saw into bigger wood.

B. They need to be run with sharp chain.

3. The “felt” difference between stock and ported gets more noticeable as displacement increases. My 044 got much stronger when bucking 24”+ oak with a 32” bar. A ported 661 / 066 on the other hand? You can practically drop it through that log like a lightsaber.

Yeah, your saws pull hard…but until I build the dyno there isn’t a way to measure it.
And even then, only the peak numbers read the speed. A lot of other handling and forgiving aspects don’t show up on the dyno unless one learns a pattern and can decipher it

The Dyno only shows what the available HP/TQ is of a saw, the chain, bar, wood, operator is something entirely different…

So i was always curious what to expect from a ported saw. I dont have one myself but got a chance to run one the other day done by a well known porter and it really didnt have that wow factor. (Not from this forum and dont want to say who. Not trying to run anyone down)
I always kinda thought like a 50cc be like a 60 and 60 be like 70 and so on.
Maybe some saws have better gains then others?

Was it loud? That's what you can expect from a ported saw: loud.

I don't compare chainsaws or race them so I have a different perspective, I never looked at getting a saw ported to time a cut or to substitute for a bigger saw, it's more about getting the best out of a model to make me more efficient with it at this point, I know this sounds weird..but saws with extra oomph can be safer to get through a cut quicker in certain scenarios when you have to.
