Once I had an opportunity to be working with Makita MM4 trimmer.....that was just before they anounced that they will bail out of gasoline program....around year 22/23....

I was impressed....as Lilspenny is describing....superb low rpm torque.....I was able to cut small trees/branches with ease with reinforced 2.4mm string

But that was more like Hondas gx25/gx50 engine then 4-mix....

Not in a chainsaw and not in a two cycle. What works in your 4 cycle blower is irrelevant to a chainsaw. The design of the 4mix is garbage and Stihl used a special oil ( Ultra) to band aide the issue.
The best and only way to test two stroke oils and establish whether or not it's any good to run in a chainsaw is to run it in a 20 doller weed eater it's called internet's science! the end...👌

That paper was written 33 years ago. Since then almost all FD oils are PIB blends. I think they figured out how much and what weight PIB's to use a long time ago.
Also of note is that Yamalube 2R is a PIB blend and has been for 40 years or so. It also has a track record of results that very other oils can match. Honda even ran the stuff back in the day.
10-4 good info. Thanks.

That test was ridiculous for variety of ressons...

It seemed to me that Richard Flagg had some concern with regard to the tackiness of Red Armor. Of course a good track record, which Red Armor has, will erase those concerns... At least they would from my mind. I wonder if Richard read that Yamaha paper and was sending out a feeler based on that. Thanks BW.... Oh, I have never run 2R in a 4-mix so I was thinking of trying it at 40:1, taking the exhaust temp, checking rpm, and going from there. Your thoughts on 2R in a 4-mix? Not sure about today's 2r composition and valve deposits, valvetrain heat, wear, etc.. ..

I m so happy that i stayed at 2 stroke. No4 mix for me.
To me the biggest drawback is on blowers due to the cam being so difficult to access. Requires too much labor. Stihl has cost themselves a lot of money by not selling more 2 stroke models.

Surprised stihl even makes blowers any longer. Seems like 9 out of 10 landscape crews run redmax and echo. They’ve had that market cornered for years
I think a lot depends on the local dealer. If I were to buy from a local dealer here in Athens, AL it would be Echo or Shindaiwa because of the excellent dealers who stock parts. Stihl parts will most likely take a week. Waiting a week just doesn't cut it.

Remax and Echo make much better blowers and trimmers.

Stop watching youtube and expecting you will get any useful information.
Richard Flagg is full of crap in this regard.
I would stick to 50:1 in your 4mix...for like the third time. A 4 stroke runs much cooler piston temps than a two stroke. Blowers and trimmers are also under much less load than a chainsaw.
In addition I would lean the carb out on your 4mix to the point it starts to lose power or has running issues. It will run cleaner like this and unlike a 2 stroke will not seize.

Might be a regional thing. Where I live it seems that at least 90% of the back pack blowers I see are Stihl. Zero Redmax and very little Echo.

We do have a excessive amount of Stihl dealer's though. Not many echo dealer's around and I don't even know where you would go to buy redmax

It is. Go to coastal California and it’s different there. Echo started marketing the first backpack leaf blower there over 50 years ago. It was a slightly modified gas powered duster, which is what the Japanese farmers used in their fields after we knocked their industry flat in WW2.

Since I live near coastal CA I can confirm that statement. I am bit surprised at the near total market saturation of Stihl products. Whenever I pass a tree or landscape crew I always try and sneak a peek at what brand equipment they're running and it's almost always Stihl or if it's a battery tool I see some EGO equipment. I have nothing against Husqvarna and might've bought some of their stuff but nobody in the county stocks it--even the one listed Husky dealer has to order anything you might want.

Any opinions on this Husqvarna oil? I found a bunch in my grandpa’s shed. He hasn’t cut in 20 years so it’s at least from 2005ish.
