guess i will quit using boat oil in lawnboys.
Well, the alternative(low ash type oils)leads to nasty deposits on the head and piston, fouled plugs and pre ignition. Piston skirts and ring grooves stay clean tthough.

If i can get 17 years out of a 2 stroke using boat oil i may start using it .
That's not very long for a Lawnboy. There are plenty of LB'S that are from the 50's still running.
I would think using a rough estimate that the motor had maybe 550 hours on it in that time period and that's on the generous side.

you know what is funny i contacted lawnboy about what oil to use in my 2 stroke mowers and they said any oil with a jaso rating of FD or iso egd
at 32:1.
The owners manual for my Duraforce says lawnboy oil or a TCW3 oil. Lawnboy oil is a marine type ashless oil.

When they came out with Direct fuel injected outboard motors,The oil manufactures had to change the boat oil to withstand much higher temperatures, because the motors were failing on the old boat oil.just saying.
Very true. DI engines don't have the luxury of a bunch of fuel evaporating in the crank case cooling the motor down.

There is one other thing that should stand out as odd from the pics I posted.

As it pertains to the deposits on the head. It's likely they where caused when the motor was run on low ash oil. The look like mettalic ash to me, but I haven't put a torch to them to see.

I love lawnboys and two strokes. I have laid up enough parts to run this one til I die.
And Husky mowers are garbage. If I went four stroke it would be a Honda.

The one i have has a honda engine ,just a husky orange paint job on it .It is a cheap throwaway unit though ,i have had to patch the front wheel area on both sides from cracks already and it is 5 years old

In 20 years time the equipment's chassis is more wore out than i would want to be using ,one reason i do not run an 056 or an 044 ,yes am sure they are great ,but a newer chassis is more dependable in my eyes .

I have seen very few saws that was worn out, most die long before oil or wear can get them.

Its the same way with logging saws. Everything is wore out before the engine. All though the guy I know running Wally world boat oils loses a few saws prematurely every year. And judging by the the smoke and smellnor his saws he's not running them lean.

Here is a pic comparing the redmax blower piston referenced above. Both exhaust side orientated.
TCW3 marine oils AKA general purpose oils just do not have the detergency required for a aircooled motor. The hotter you run your motors the worse it gets.20160608_124133.jpg

Only thing looked odd to me was the rusty color on the head and plug ,never seen that in a 2 stroke ,looked like some black goo around the edge also

The rusty color is caused by MMT. Had a friend give me a half full bottle of octane booster so I dumped it in to 3 gallons of mix to get rid of it. Hence the rusty color. The outside edge is carbon due to a poorly designed and excessively clearanced squish area. The cylinder had a ring around it too corresponding with the upper ring land. It actually scuffed the land are a bit all they way around the piston.
One other point. This engine has a given er that keeps the rpms to around 3000 so it should run a very long time without issue. Usually what kills these motors before anytging else is the lower PTO seal goes and allows dirt to trash the lower PTO bearing. You typically don't know it till it starts lean surging like mine did. By then it's too late. You can slap a new bearing and seal in them and your good to go, but short blocks are cheap, so I go that route. The big end bearing goes next typically and then it destroys the engine without warning so your better off just replacing the works.

Sounds like an 029 ,just yard the engine and replace it ,is that actual rust ? or just the color it burned ? Rust will take out bearings in no time ,some racing oils do not have rust inhibitors (for those reading that do not know) and when ope sits ,can corrode internally making a engine fail sooner ..

Does K2 have any rust protection ?

Does seafoam help with these kind of things ?

No, it's not actually rust. It's just the color that MMT causes when it combusts.
Ester oils and castor oils are terrible for rust. And two cycle oils don't have rust inhibitors per se. The calcium and magnesium sulfonates that are found in low ash/ jaso type oils do neutralize acids and thus help with corrosion. However, most of the corrosion protection is from the base oil itself wetting the internal surfaces. It is smart, regardless of oil used to lay them up with fogging oil if they are going to sit for a month or more in a humid climate like ours.
