You could get a 23 (40 cal) and also a 9mm conversion barrel + a few 9mm mags. Just swap barrel and mags and your shooting one or the other.
You can even go a step further and get a G32 barrel (.357sig) - those will work out of your G23 40 cal mags.
From there it's just a decision between gen 3 and gen4
gen 3 - I like the talon grip tape on the gen3 frame/grip.
gen4 - grip is pretty good from factory and you can adjust the size of the grip. I think the magazine release is better design on the gen4. I think the dual recoil spring is a better spring as well vs the gen3.

The main difference between the G23 and G19 is how wide the breach is cut on the slide. The barrel hood of the .40 is a little wider. So to do the conversion barrel they make a 9mm barrel with a wider hood.
Other differences would be the extractor and ejector.
I've been shooting my conversion barrel for years with out a single problem.
