i haven’t had time to mill anything. my wife got a travel trailer from her parents that has some water damage that is now on the top of her honey dew list.
it was a project just getting it into the shop.

i cut some oak for my grandfather in law. his hobby is wood working and makes each one of my kids a bedroom set and dressers. he made
my wife’s when she was a kid too.

i will have have four sets when he finishes my youngests lol.

i and looking forward to being able to contribute at least some wood

oaks seems to want to split more along the whole pcs then just the end like other woods…. but then again i think i had it drying in direct heat.

this log has less rot around it then other oak logs i have milled. is that because it might be more heart wood or just a specific species of oak?

I'm just about sworn off of chainsaw milling. In the future if I run across projects like this I'm going to talk to my buddy with a bandsaw mill and see if I can steal it for a bit. It took me and a neighbor 2.5 full days to mill 15 11' x 14" x 5" beams with a 660 and an alaskan mill. I've still got sawdust in my boots and can hear the 660 roaring at wot. Not all the beams are in the pic, and I still need to trim the 3 front guys. I milled them then was reminded that squaring 3 sides of a log is easier than edging 3 slabs.

Hardwood is much more difficult to get dry without lots of degradation as opposed to softwood.....especially wider slabs, and more so as you get closer to the center of the log.....sometimes slabs cut near the heart will split completely in two.

i think they are in the white oak family. not 100% sure. but they lack the red hue when wet and the smoother bark of a red oak.

If it's post oak it'll do all kinds of horrible stuff as it dries.

They turned out nice. I been there too....compared to a bandsaw mill an Alaskan mill is excruciatingly slow.

My dad got an Alaskan mill when I was about 7 and used it on part of one oak log before he gave up. We now have a bandmill (Norwood HD36v2) that we are very happy with. Absolute night and day difference in performance (and price too, unfortunately).
