Since I have never done any bandsaw milling, how long does it take to saw a log like the one in your pic?
probably hour and half…. what takes the longest is cutting the bark off. i don’t know if I do it efficiently. but i cut each side of the log to make it square. so i have to roll
it 4 times. that one is big and had to get me wife to help roll it.

but it took us just as long to cut a smaller hickory log because that wood is so much slower to cut.

Slow compared to a circular sawmill. Fast compared to a chainsaw mill.

I figured it wouldn't compare to a circular mill, but was just curious. On my circular mill I can fly with poplar even if the teeth aren't real sharp. The 9/32" kerf does make a ridiculous amount of sawdust though.

i only did chainsaw milling before we got the bandsaw. so it seems to fly to me lol

when i was very young my grandpa had a old circular saw mill on the farm that was powered off a belt from the tractor. sadly the wood on that mill rotted and i only saw it operated once by my dad.

It would probably take me 20min to do that whole log on the head saw. Now that I have a dual saw edger, I would imagine I could do the whole thing in 10min. Keep in mind that that requires me running the saw & turning the log on the setworks, my Dad & BIL pulling boards off, and two of my boys running the edger.

I edge with a track saw and table saw later. Usually right before final stacking.

If you surf the net you can find dozens of sites regarding about any subject related to bandsaw mills ..One forum which for some reason I can't find any more is on home builts including the sharpeners .
I have one partialy built using the drive wheels from a Ford Escort which I have options for the power .18 HP Briggs,15 HP Wisconsin twin,31 HP Wisconsin 4 or a 10 HP three phase electric moter using a phase convertor. I'm leaning towards the electric but it would not be portable which in itself would be good as I have no intention of driving all over a three county area cutting up yard trees .
So far I have the tracks and head works carriage done .Needs the set works and deciding how to advance the carriage which could be cable or hydraulic .For that matter I could make it electric .

More on that .Sometimes with all good intentions life in general gets in the way .So it is with me which is why that partly built mill is taking up almost 1/3 of my 60 by 70 shop .Too many irons in the fire to say an old adage but so it is .
In closing on this thing to say the main frame for that mill is an 8" frame 26 feet long that once hauled NFL footballs all over the USA.It once belonged to Wilson sporting goods in Ada Ohio the sole makers of NFL footballs . I really don't build anything ,just recycle old junk .You have to think outside of the box to be a true junk yard dawg .
