Hi all,

First off, great forum! I've been picking up bits of info from you all for the last few years but never joined.

Now I've got a question I can't seem to find an answer for.
I picked up a Husqvarna 395xp and have now got a few hours on it. Mostly the saw will be used for milling.
Question is, what mods, if any, are necessary right out of the box on these things if the only concern is longevity?

I've found some threads and videos with muffler mods but they seem to be done along with porting. Does this saw need a muffler mod in stock trim to not run too hot? Is there anything else this saw needs done to not burn itself down? She's a 2019 Brazilian model by the way.

Any info is greatly appreciated!

An 881, other than that you can certainly do a muffler mod, you will need to retune
the carb afterwards, run it rich enough, and go atleast 40:1 oil mix.

I’d defeat the carb limiters so I could tune it for the mill

This /\
Going to want a richer than normal mixture.

Muffler Mod won't hurt either, I like a winter filter 537444403 wrapped with an Outerwears cover 911760 to work the other end to let the motor work easy as it can.

What you Do NOT need is super duper high compression and big timing advances, keep them small or not at all.

Exactly what he said. I mill with my 394, and it's stock besides a muffler mod and timing advance. I might do gasket delete in the future, but it's a milling beast as is.

Thanks for the answers!
So is there a standard program for doing a muffler mod on this saw?
Haven't pulled it off yet but read something about a middle baffle that may or may not need to be cut/modified. Or is it just enlarge the outlet or add another?

Easiest is to add a 288xp deflector and screen in front of the existing one.

And if 288 deflectors prove elusive, site member @Red97 can be pm'd. He produces deflectors in three sizes at very reasonable cost. They can be cut and shaped easily, then welded or rivet-nutted on. I riv-nut mine, using the cap-screws to retain s/s mesh over a step-drilled hole. easy peasy.

I took the baffle tube out, but won't do that again. Like Steve said another port right in front of the stock one.

They can be bought at our site sponsor HLSupply.

i would suggest you get a "Magnum" sticker... everything's better with a MAGNUM sticker
Especially condoms.

Like Steve said, muffler mod to get the heat out of the saw and fumes away from you.

You don’t want a lot of compression for a mill saw, it will produce more heat and that is your enemy milling.

BTW, grab an extra OEM top end now. They are only around $100, not sure how long this will last. Wasn’t long ago that Stihl pistons were under 1/2 the price they are now.

Grand idea. Link?

Best I've found was $150 and HL has it at $189. Might have already crept back up.

Squish is about 50 stock. Mine responded very well to a BGD and muffin mod and milled like that for a long time.

Welcome to the site. Let me give you a legend for the typical saw mods, aka the Mustang 044 package.

BGD=Base Gasket Delete
TA=Timing Advance
DPM=Dual Port Muffler
MM-Muffler Mod
HD2=Newer type Stihl cage airfilter for the bigger models (044’046/074/066 etc...)

Yes i bought one recently at about 200$

OP
I personally found this saw runs great stock for milling. I personally wouldnt touch the muffler as mine never got to hot doing the job.

limiters suck but it really can suck removing them. Instead a splined screw driver off of amazon does just as good.

Side cutters will easily snip off the “limiter” part of the screw holder. The holder must be reinstalled because it holds the spring tension on the screw. It’s easiest to just use the splined tool though and they stay on the screw better when the saw is running. If it was me I’d just add another deflector to the muffler, retune to the neighborhood of 12500rpm, run at least 40:1 mix and your all set to mill as much as you please. The stock filter is fine. You don’t need a screamer with 230psi to mill. Longevity and reliability is what you want.
