I just re read your post about the 024 cover size vs 026 cover. Never had an 024 to compare. You'll get something figgerred out

The air filter cover fitting tight...there's a plastic tab sticking out of the filter that goes inside the knob. I trimmed 1/16" off of that and the cover went on better. There's actually a good bit of room still between the filter and cover, but I drilled some small holes in the front left of the cover.

I couldn't get mine to fit without rotating the carb, or I wouldn't have. My air filter / cover is now cocked about 1/8" to the right. But, like a husky has 5 different colors, when stihl av's wear a bit, the covers don't line up perfectly either. Meh
That's on a 260 filter. There's a tit that the cover locks on.

On early 026 and 024, the cover locks between the nuts.

I have to change the coil on the saw.

Tough to tune. Leaned out and couldn't richen at one point. It was happy at around 15,500. Really happy.

I looked at the tach afterwards and saw this

This is a piece of red oak.

I'd say it was a medium fail. I plan on swapping the coil out, playing with the timing and maybe tossing the 194 back on just to see.

Holy RPM! Never seen 175xx on a tach before. I love that fact that this is late 80s tech and in continues to evolve. Can't wait to see when you get it all dialed in.

Without reading back through all of this awesomeness, what is the difference now between this and an 026? Enginewise, and case capacity

It's a super. Same case. 026 jug, so same cc.
So same as mine. I'm not 100% happy with the 044 boot. It kinks slightly no matter how I turned it today. It ain't much, and with this size carb maybe it doesn't matter. Either way, it bugs me. I tried boots from an 039, 036, 361,044, and 066, but with different stud clocking, and me not being 100% committed to the swap at the time, I just used the 44 boot. A different one may fit better and leave a better path to the jug. The only other boot I've ever heard used was an 038

The 038 boot is really bad. 44 much better.

This saw has never run right. I'm swapping the coil next. May toss the stock 194 back on.

The piston has some fine vertical scratches on it. The tach didn't tell the whole story. It only got one shot during the lean piss rev. The saw probably saw 18,500 briefly.

Yea mine did that on me too. It's gotta be a bit rich for the first few cuts till the heat maxes out, then tune it.

This may be a race only Mod BT.

The saw is a good runner with the 194. Much better drivability.

It's possible it's the carb, but I had a similar idle issue with the OEM 194 carb.

Coil will be changed, I'll see the RPM difference between the 044 carb and the stock 194 carb with a solid 4 stroke.

I gotta check a comp reading as well.

This may be like running you're old muscle car with open headers and a crazy big camshaft. Great for the quarter mile, but not to get groceries.

I'm still trying to fully decide if I like the mod.

If it can cut a log 1 second faster, but won't idle right and won't hold tune, not sure I want it.

I have a bunch of other things to do before I pass final judgement on the mod.

The 044 carb makes them sing with no load, much more than the 194. If a guy was to cut up to say... 6" limbs all day, there's a huge advantage. Above that, there's still an advantage, just not as pronounced. The 3/8 lo pro is quickest in small stuff. If I'm gonna cut 12 or 16" stuff or do any noodling with it, I'd go .325 or full 3/8. There's not enough room for chips with 3/8 lo pro for noodling

The bigger Venturi definitely adds no load RPM. I have to figure out a way to mount my fast tach so I can see what it does in the cut.

I'm only running a top ring in the saw. Comp feels pretty brutal to the arm. I'll pull a reading today.

I'm not sure if the saw needs the bigger venturi at 12,000 rpm-which would be a great cutting RPM. I think the 044 intake boot may add something to the saw, even with the 194. Its much less restrictive.
