I look forward to your findings. I hope you confirm the best findings for a good work saw.
Thanks for posting

The question I have is whether the 044 carb is really worth it. On smaller stuff, it may be.

For all around cutting, with an rpm of 12k in wood, I'm not sure if the extra airflow is needed.

The 026 boot is quite restrictive. The 44 boot alone may be an upgrade.

I'm gonna bring the 194 carb with me to the CT GTG. I'm hoping to get this lil guy on the Dyno. Swapping the carbs for a run shouldn't take that much time. Dyno measurements will answer this question with no guesswork.

Adding the bigger carb may be a mod o f the past.
How did you hook up the choke on the 044 carb? What intake boot did you use?

An 044 boot works, you don`t need a choke.

I have read the posts. Here are my questions. If you have a 024 with a bad top end and you slap a 026 top end on it, what, if any, difficulty will you have with it? Is it just that the old 024 top cover will not fit, or is it more difficult than that? I have a few 024 carcasses (including a West German Super) that I was planning on making into 026's. I am not hating on 024's, but I already have one and I am planning to flip these saws I put together.

Only the supers will take an 026 top end. Other than that the others will have to answer...

Hole pattern the same.

Regular 024-2mm shorter stroke. So you need to pull .040 out of a 26 jug just to get normal squish. Then you have the same chamber and less volume. But you also have a shorter stroke, so the exhaust may be too high.

I'm gonna try one.

An 024 super has the same stroke and will accept an 026 jug with only the fins milled. If you add an 026 cover, you can leave the fins.

The ones I was planning to build have bad bearings. I might just buy the 026 cranks with bearings and convert them to 026's. They seem to be more sought after in my area.

The stroke is different from the 024 to the 026. The 024 super crank is the same as the 026. The filter for the 024 is generally different (short, fat and squatty  ). If you have the 024 super -- you are good. Get the 026 piston cylinder and make the swap. The 024 are not really less desirable in some ways. (perhaps you mean the resale is not as the 026, on that I certainly understand).
Enjoy your saw rebuilds.

You can't fit a 26 crank in a non-S 24 case.
The 026 crank will physically "fit" but the angle is way off.
The skirt would drag something awful.
I have an 024 case with a 026 crank in it now with brand new bearings sitting waiting to be split.

There was an old thread where Mastermind references this back on AS.

I think the thread was Randy's 024/26 sleeper build.

You can tell it will not work by the way the crank rolls around.

OK. I assume these S's mean they are Supers, correct?View attachment 19912
I think the "S" means Stihl. It's on every 024 jug I've ever seen. Look back in this thread.

Page 2 post 21, page 5 post 89.

I could be mistaken on this one, but I believe the jugs are 42mm and exactly the same on the 024/024S. They changed the piston for the stroke difference I believe.

Mark,

It's easier to just use a usable 026 case. They're cheap and rarely have bad bearings.
