I know you’ve said it was worse with more fuel. But It sure seems like you could fatten the tune up a little. Still have the timing advanced?
The timing is just a hair (.15mm) advanced. @Deets066 recommended I try replacing the HT lead from the coil to the plug as well, just to eliminate that. That tune was just under the limiter but I agree it does seem a little lean after that cut. I have a feeling the coil is dodgy, I do have the option of pulling the flywheel and unlimited coil off another 066 I have, its a metal tag decomp so will be unlimited.

Here it is, certainly no slouch but still popping...
Can tell it's a strong saw that will only get stronger once you get to the bottom of the braking down electrical problem.
Can't believe how green it is there I'm still in drought here but not as bad as last year had a few mil here and there just enough to keep thing's alive.

Thanks Rouge, got a few things to try this weekend to see if we can get to the bottom of it. Thats typical for spring here, had quite a bit of rain last week and a whole lot more due next week. We get something around 1200mm annually here.

Well I replaced the HT lead and sparkplug and will see in the morning if that makes a difference...I have a feeling it won't. So, in the meantime, I've pulled the flywheel and coil off my other 066 (siezed and in bits), its has a 1311 Lida coil and a 1209/1214B flywheel:

@Definitive Dave 's excellent thread tells me that this coil and flywheel combination is definitely unlimited...and it looks like it has the easy start low rpm retard on the spark...like we discussed earlier in the thread

It’s usually apparent if it’s a bad connection with the plug wire, corrosion etc.

I'm sorry to bother you Dave
nah you are fine, just wish I had more time for research, I had a lot of Stihl documentation ruined in a flooded basement and am still trying to get all the new stuff sorted into a usable form
I need to hire a research staff LOL

After that cylinder has been Monkied with it's going to want to tune out much higher than the red light indicator or any limiter. To me it sounds a little rich. Instead of tuning it by free speed I'd tune the high side in a light cut, out till it 4 strokes then back in till it just cleans up.

Thanks Shaun, I'll try that soon. If you're a professional overthinker I certainly can relate to that! But I've been thinking, in that 084 tech doc I posted earlier (see below) Stihl mentions about the replacement coil having a longer burning spark and better flame propagation compared to the earlier limited CDIC coil (which looks almost identical to the RL coil - I've looked on one of my 084's). I wonder if that's what happening? Perhaps it is accentuated with the higher compression in the ported cylinder?

The more compression you have, the less it will like timing advance usually. It depends though. I would try swapping the coil/flywheel to the unlimited one out of curiosity, if you have already tried leaning the H out a tad. Keep the timing key advance the same and retest. Change the plug.

There's no advance at all now, brand new plug too. 6.15am Saturday morning here, I'll have some breakfast and head out soon.

So, I fitted the unlimited coil and flywheel with .020 off the key. Had to tuck the red light wire down beside the coil as it is now redundant.

I got to run the saw a wee while ago. Night and Day difference, no popcorn and noticibly more power! It actually scares me a little bit now this saw. Its a monster....
Unfortunately Vimeo tells me I have exceeded my weekly limit on data storage so until I resolve that I can't upload a video :(
