Now, I ran this saw for the first time this morning and it has SO MUCH TORQUE! It's quite amazing actually. Now one thing I notice, that with only .020 off the key that I'm getting some 'popcorn' at higher RPM, which goes away when the revs come down in the cut. The red light works as it should and comes on at 12,000 and the limiter cuts the revs at 13,500, as it should, but my question to all those 066 buffs out there, is does the coil have a substantial built-in advance? Apart from lots of compression, I have had no difficulty starting it and it hasn't 'bit' me yet. @Definitive Dave you have an excellent thread that you started here: https://opeforum.com/threads/064-066-ms650-ms660-info-thread.696/ maybe you can help me? Is .020 too much advance?
my 066 is unlimited and will bite you if you are not committed when pulling

You may like the stock timing on these saws. All of my 1122s are “stock” timing but have a variety of coil combos. My favorite is the 064 1201 flywheel with an 046 ignition.
Yep, they all can bite ya.

Nice build thread by the way.

What’s the compression?

You sure it’s not the limited coil you are hearing?
Nope, I'm absolutely sure, it's only noticeable when in the cut and it goes away when I really bring the revs down. Sort of a popping sound, and it was way worse when I richened the saw up

Stock timing on mine. Really likes a good load at this tune. You can hear it pop a couple of times on the first cut
Thanks for sending that through. Mine pops way more than that with .020 off the key, they must have an aggressive advance curve on the coil?

If it was that aggressive wouldn't it be biting?

Not necessarily, some coils retard at low revs for easy starting and advance at high revs for power. Thats why they call it an advance 'curve' - its not linear across the rev range. The following tech bulletin for an 084 is one example of the retard for easy starting:

I don't think it could have been explained more succinctly.

I have the same problem with my TM 064. I'd like to get somebody smarter than me to run it and give me their opinion.
