Very little sap wood, that tree was nearing its end. Or is it common in your area to have that much heart in ash?
Pretty common around here. Usually ash gets 16 inches and gets rotten in the middle or dies. I haven't seen an ash stand this healthy locally possibly ever!

Here’s what most of mine have been looking like. Dark but relatively small heart. This tree was 22” dbh. Nice and healthy.

Going in the woods this morning to drop some more trees. Since we’ve had a spell of sub 10 degree temps my plan is to leave the ash alone for today and go after sugar maple. I’m doing this because of how brittle ash gets with the colder temps. As you pros know, it makes them more likely to split when the top is plowing through other tops in its way to the ground. And also barber chairing at the stump.

Relevant thinking or over thinking? Trying to take the current environment into account while making my felling plans for the day. And not just with reference to splits affecting log value, the bigger part is safety.

Nail a few today gents. Feeling confident. Bored in, opened the bore toward the back enough to give me room on the bar. Took my time and set the hinge, set the trigger, wedges on the sides just in case I misjudged the tree, released the trigger. On the bigger of the two pictured I aimed for a gap between a stump and another log that was just wide enough for the trunk of the tree I was felling....freaking nailed it. 28” bar on the 288, good sized tree for me. Getting better making low stumps too. Cutting low is a lot different than 18” higher for me.
