Anything ran on Stihl Ultra at low rpm and slap infested with carbon
I believe that there is thread on here about what the best oils are. You should get to reading ...:p

Had a BR600 come in, complaint was not running right. Was difficult to start but finally got it running, only on choke until it warmed up though. Once warm it would run off choke but didn't want to rev up. Adjusted carb and got it running at full throttle, took it out and ran the pee out of it for 20 minutes, then it starts spark knocking at idle. Go to shut it off and it continues to spark knock, had to choke it down. When I did I caught a wiff of the exhaust, took the cap off and it was FULL of Red Diesel, surprised it would even run on it!

Had a customer drop off a MTD 38" rider, said will not start so he put in a new battery and spark plug. I turn the key and the engine spins with ZERO resistance. I raise the hood to see if he left the plug out and the rod is hanging out the side of the block! That had to of made a noise before stopping abruptly.

How about a guy that drops his mower off complaining that he can't get it to start, been messing with it for three weeks himself,....

These are my favorite....they mess with it for three weeks, bring it in, then *b-word when you tell em my shop is a week out and they want to mow yesterday.

Guy brings in two Kawasaki jet skis on a double trailer that he just bought at an auction, repair order says one runs bad and the other won't start......
First one that won't start I remove the seat to take a look..... empty hull.... no motor, no electrics, no anything....
Second one runs but sounds like it has a massive exhaust leak, so I start feeling around the exhaust for a short time then shut it off so it doesn't get hot. I then go get a mirror and flashlight to look around. Then I see the throws of the crank staring back at me... yup
I was feeling around for a leak mere millimeters from a crankshaft spinning at almost 3k RPM's..... huge piece of the case was gone,. Like bigger than my open hand huge...

That could have gone bad quickly... Glad you still have all of your digits!

A clamshell Husqvarna 36 showed up. Would not start. I pulled the recoil and the flywheel was easily moved in all directions. It seems someone thought it bolted up like a Stihl 029. The clamshell bottom was bolted down to the housing, but none of the bolts that bolt the pan to the cylinder were tight. They also used clear RTV to seal the halves... Peeled right off easily enough though!

I had a Shindaiwa come in once that had a "loose bar stud" and idling issue. I tuned the carb and fixed the idle problem but when I moved around to the bar stud problem I couldn't get the nut to spin loose to take the bar, chain, and cover off... Huh... I found out the bar stud was spinning so I jamed a screw driver in there to help pinch the stud so I could impact off the bar nut. Got it apart and I noticed the stud wouldn't back out of the case. Yes it was a threaded stud and the threaded hole actually went all the way through the case. So I went "righty tighty from the outside and the stud fell into the tank. I giggled the tank and out fell the bar stud but I heard something else... Shook it some more and out falls a 3/8 - 7/16" bolt.

Some dumb ass (current owner - I could tell by the look on his face) used a socket wrench with an over sized bolt and ran it through the case (stripping all the threads) from the inside out when the origional bar stud worked itself loose and fell into the tank. Heli-coil and the saw was fixed.

Good stories!!

Those vertical shaft lawn mower engines seem especially intolerant to low oil level... Makes for broken and blue rods in a hurry....

Neighbor brought over his Toro SP walk behind mower to change drive belts. Briggs 725 series engine. I'm reading the engine labels and go WTF????? Label says NEVER change the oil - only add when low. Seems real stupid to me. Neighbor said he'd never seen that and changes oil every 25 hours. I said good - keep it up.

Had a z-turn with 2 fuel tanks come in with complaint of smoke. Yeah, started and got it up to temp on the tank of gas. Still ran after switching to tank that had diesel. not well, but ran.

My favorite part of these kind of stories is that it was always the wife/kids/neighbor. "Of course sir. Its your story and your sticking to it."
I'm running a diesel gas blend in my kohler powered lawn mower right now... Free drain gas from work in my free mower. ;)

This is some funny reading. I imagine more headache than funny for you guys that have to deal politely with the owners, but for the rest of us this is a hoot.

I bought a lot of 8 saws. One is an Eager Beaver 2.1 - first I've seen. The throttle has no linkage and I say WTF???? How he throttle up? He had run a wire (under screwdriver) from carb link to screw in handle. Guess he used his right pinkie finger. The whole saw is patched together with wire. Kinda cool jury rigging. My first and LAST Eager Beaver - such a PITA to work on.
