Because they’re trying to make the crank and bearings last longer Most ported 7900’s need to be tuned 1/4 - 1/2 leaner than the limiter, especially on the 12,8 limited coil models

But isn't 12,800 to rich? My 7900 runs at 13,200 ans still 4strokes until i push it down hard.

My Dolmar PS-7900 cleans up nicely with my 36" B&C setup or with rakers set to .040-.050" on her main 20"B&C setup.
Stock saw with mild MM, 13.5k coil, WOT no load set to 13.3-13.4k.

That been said, I guess another quarter turn or so is the simpler solution. o_O

I can't see the point in rev limiting a saw. Even though a saw is rev limited, you could still potentially burn it up by not giving it enough fuel if you would turn the H screw far past the rev limit point.

As Kevin @huskihl said, longevity.
Customer can't over-rev the engine blowing everything to bits!

I have a Dolmar MS30U weed whacker, best unit I ever had the pleasure to work with - till it wasn't.
Just outside of warranty I began having issues with the unit, tinkered around not really knowing what I am doing.
It has an unlimited coil and I tweaked it so high it blew a conrod bearing and ate the numerous pieces.
It was the most expensive weed whacker I ever purchased, now I have the cheapest I could find and just run the crap out of them.

I have no beef with limited coils, rpm under load is noticeably lower (on stock saws).

Help me choose a new saw please.

So I am a new member that has lurked a while. I just read all 285 pages of this and to my dismay found out Makita is giving up on the gas saws. Reason for the dismay is that I was given a 6401 a couple of years ago. We have always had Stihl on the farm, but i love this 6401. So I decided to switch to Dolmar/Makita saws, sold 2 Stihls (029 and 034) and bought a new EA6100. It is another great saw but close in power to the 6401, so the 6401 got a new P/C and became 79cc. I then sold a MS180 so I could get an EA4300, again could not be happier with that saw and the other 2 Makitas. Home Depot had a EA4300 rental for sale for $165 so I want to check it out, looked great so I offered $120. Now I have 4 Makitas.

DCS6401/79xx w/24" and 28" 3/8
EA6100 w/20" 3/8
EA4300 w/18" 3/8lp
EA4300 w/16" 3/8lp

So now for the help choosing. I want to get another mid size saw, I want to run an 18" w/3/8 with authority. I am looking at the EA5600 and the EA5000. I have read how grate the 5105/5000 saw is but not a lot of reading on the 5600. With the 5600 I really like the captive bar nuts , the air filter, the outer dog attached to the clutch cover not loose like the 5000, and the strato ( is it better?). The 5000 is lighter, better power to weight ratio, maybe built better.

We use saws around the farm cleaning up fence rows, hedge rows, creeks, and cut firewood for camping and back yard fires. Not a pro logger, but we do cut quite a bit. Is there any reason not to get the 5600? Is the 5000 a much better saw?

It figures that I chose to switch to Makita, and they are now pulling the plug. I have 2 Stihls left (029 and 044) and will sell them when I get a 5600 or 5000.

Thanks for any wisdom/opinions that you can share.

Brian

It’s not just about lean conditions raising the rpm burning it up. Bearings and the crank on the saw are only designed to handle so much no load rpm out of the wood before they begin to self destruct. Even if the fuel mixture is still safe.

Get them both!

The EA5000 is lighter and more compact, mine is ported and she runs 3/8" 20" quite well.
18" would be much better considering 20" throws this unit out of balance.
I can only assume a stock EA5000 will run 3/8" 18" perfectly fine.

The EA5600 is more bulky, a little more heavier, but she has power to spare.
I run 3/8" 18" on mine, she's pulling it with authority!

The EA5600 is more affordable than the EA5000 and she sports some PRO level features.

Welcome TAB_Farms. It seems at least in the Midwest the ps5105/5100 must have been a popular model based on the amount of them I have seen for sale used on Craigslist. Most appear to be in fairly decent condition and are usually priced less than $300 USD.
I bought my ps5105 used and it was the first professional class saw that I owned. And haven’t looked back. The anti-vibration system is excellent. Mine is .325 pitch with a 20 inch narrow kerf bar and have not tried 3/8 pitch on it. It pulls the .325 effortlessly. I have no experience with the EA5600 but it looks interesting. I may have to buy one before production ends!

My 5105 has been a great saw. I have a 16inch bar and chain in 3/8 and it will certainly pull it with no problems. I would say 18 would be fine. Both if these pics are full bar in Oak and Elm.

Nothing wrong with the PS-550/EA5600, she may be plastic on the outside but she's metal where it matters the most!

Captive nuts, heavy duty air filter (similar to the one on the EA6100), bigger volume fluid tanks, slightly higher power.
She is heavier dry PHO.

Thanks for all the replies.

The 5600 is a plastic case saw. It also is not as popular so parts may be harder to find in the long run.

I had not realized the 5600 was a plastic case saw so that is not what I would want. Also had not thought of parts availability down the road, with Makita pulling the plug it will surely be an issue.

Get them both!

I very well might. I think I will order a new EA5000this week. I was looking at Home depot and they have gone from renting 64xx's to 6100's and now what they have 5600's. They have an ea6100 rental for sale right now for $240, so I am trying to talk myself into buying it to put on the shelf for back up/parts. Then when the EA5600's go up for sale maybe getting one or two of them just to have.

Just to make sure I don't get something I did not want, the Makita EA5000 is the same as the Dolmar 5105 right? The 5100 is not the same as a 5105?

Thanks Brian

Yes on the 5100/5105. The 5600 is a plastic case saw. It also is not as popular so parts may be harder to find in the long run.

Nice collection of blues ...... may I ask your opinion on the Tsumura light weights as opposed to Sugiharahs?
The Tsumuras seam to visually match all version of Dollies nicely.

To all, I'm off to page 139. Still reading along when time allows. Trying to catch up.

I've had both. Both are good bars. I like the way the tsumura looks.
