I thought I didn't need a brake on my PM55 when I rebuilt it, first time I ran it I had to get a bandage for my thumb. That was too close of call for me so I added a cover with brake when I got back from that venture.

Chris - On the 5-10 model with the taller AF cover is it possible to put an adapter under an SDC and make it work.

McCulloch 5-10 DC13.jpg

Not possible on the 1-10 through 3-10 models as they have a lower profile air filter cover and fuel tank and there is no room for the taller carburetor.

McCulloch sold kits to change from the MAC10 to SDC carburetors that included a new tank bottom with the appropriate mount for the SDC carburetors. One version for the low tops, and one for the 4-10/5-10 models See how the air filter has an extra bump out to clear the choke..

Chain brakes??? I have four McCullochs and none of them have chain brakes on them. Chain brakes are for sissies!! 🤣

My 7-10 likes to jump at me. I added a brake.
The muffler on that thing still occasionally tries to brand me, though.

The SDC18 and up are all the larger venturi/throttle bore. You probably want one that is fully adjustable, having the needle at at angle makes adjusting them easier but the only fully adjustable carburetor with the angled screws that I am aware of is the 65 that comes with the smaller diameter 90° inlet.

The carburetor also needs to have the "internal" idle speed screw (built into the carburetor) since there is no provision for an external idle speed adjustment on the 5-10.

Full adjustable, internal idle speed adjust carburetors include the SDC18, 20, 37, 37A, and 65. There may be others but that's all I have in my notes.

.I can run the PM700 without a brake, but I'd like it to be original as possible.
I totally understand that, I am the same way. If mine came with them, I would have left them on.

Got both brake and brakeless clutch covers for mine. I'll probably keep the brake on it long as @hacskaroly isn't around to make fun of me.
I don't have a problem with you using a girl's saw 🤣

Son Jeff and I spent some time yesterday trying to organize a mess of electronic ignitions for the small McCulloch saws.

20251012_132409.jpg

I wanted to check/test some different coil and flywheel combinations and came up with this set up using a 300 Series short block, degree wheel, and timing light. I had to use a small battery charger to provide the 12V for the timing light, Jeff demonstrating our arrangement.

20251011_134102.jpg

20251012_132320.jpg

We found it was necessary to check and reset the degree wheel about every other test as it seemed to slip a little. We were using the cordless drill to spin engine, and discovered right away that the inductive pickup for the timing light had to be as far away from the coil as possible to get a reliable indication.

The old Craftsman timing light has probably been with me for 45+ years. Jeff thought it looked like a Buck Rogers device.

20251012_132339.jpg

Once I get the information sorted out (with some part numbers and descriptions) I will post the results, but the bottom line is there are two distinct flywheels (94513 is marked "IGN" and 219211 is marked "CDI" or "BB") and a whole variety of coils. Brown or white coils only work properly with the IGN flywheels, and the black SEM coils only work properly with the CDI or BB flywheels. I still need to see if I can find a 222778 flywheel and compare it with the others used on the small saws. The keyways are in a different location, about 20° variation between the two. With the correct flywheel and coil pared together the ignition at full speed is around 30° BTDC and retards around 4-5° when turning slowly.

Many of the black, SEM coils came to me mixed together, and in a few instances had incorrect part numbers on the boxes or bags. A few of the brown and white coils came without part numbers and not being as familiar with the different models at the time, I did not know what they should fit. I would like to think that I am getting some of the details under control, but it still a bit of a process for me. For a few years I kept looking at the brown coils and thinking they were some sort of early experimental electronic ignitions for the 10 Series saws, then I finally go into a few of the 300 Series models and realized what they were for.

So far I think I have encountered 5 different spark plug lead lengths on SEM coils, and at least 2 distinctly different styles of spark plug boots.

20251012_142741.jpg

To add to the confusion, there are a few factory sealed bags with the coil, a length of plug wire, and two different boots but the part number only references one particular application...

20251012_142856.jpg

For the brown/white coils, there are 5 different part numbers appearing on different packages.

20251012_142246.jpg

215270 is the coil without a plug lead, 219331 (written on the OEM package marked 300 Ser) refers to a coil and flywheel combination package with the CDI flywheel and black SEM coil.

All of these details I am beginning to try and get straightened out in my mind, and in my inventory.

I managed to find a ProLine fuel line & filter for the PM700 & installed that today.I also put a 20 in.bar & chain on the saw.Still waiting to hear from Mark on the sawdust screen. After installing the new fuel line I had to do a minor carb adjustment as when I'd go to throttle the saw up it'd stutter a bit.A 1/4 turn open on the lo screw made a world of difference. Here are some pics
