I did run the Craftsman a bit yesterday and I was surprised how well it did in my oak test log. I would still choose my 550XP or PM55 for a lot of cutting, but the Craftsman did not seem to be lacking in the HP department, and the chain oiler was certainly more than adequate.

I've heard they run pretty good. I'll pick one up if one becomes available nearby at the right price. There's a eBay seller that thinks the Mac versions are made of gold even though they're the same as the Craftsman and MTD variants.

I worked on a couple of those cheap plastic "Remington" saws made by MTD back a few yrs.ago.MTD did what they do best - cheapen the hell out of everything. There was nothing that even resembled the original Remington saws except the name.

I'm making this a Jenn Feng week, this Timber Bear 849 had very little use, cleaned up pretty nicely. Interesting that the Jenn Feng models I've worked on so far all use a K095 bar mount. I had a few NOS McCulloch bars in .325 with the K095 mount and never knew just when/where/why they went that route. Now I have an idea anyway.

The starter side says 55cc, and the clutch side has the Timber Bear 849 decal.

This one had a major issue during testing at Oregon.

20240326_133313.jpg

Several years ago Bob Johnson gave me three NOS short blocks in a chassis, before this week I did not know what saw they were. It turns out they were the 49cc version of these models (thanks to Max for that information). If I follow the IPL's correctly there were 46, 49, and 55 cc versions of these. I'm guessing the Timber bear was actually the 49cc version and the starter was switched from another saw. Anyway, I put the 49cc short block into the Timber Bear chassis.

I had a problem with the oil pump so I pulled it back down and found the gear on the piston had been damaged. I did have a new one on hand so I installed it and fixed the oiler, or so I thought. I was interested in seeing out this saw performed so I made a few cuts in my oak test log, like the Craftsman the engine develops good power, but the oiler failed again during the testing. At that point I just cleaned it up for the display.

I wish I knew what was causing the oiler gear to fail, I only have a couple left (301913) and don't want to wreck them all just to find out.

I also found a 42cc, 46cc, and 49cc in the collection of Oregon test saws. I decided to clean up the 46 and 49 models for the display, I'll keep the 42 on hand as a parts saw if needed. I will be on the lookout for more of these saws, particularly if they are dressed up as a Remington, Troy Built, or MTD just to try and round out the collection.

The 49 was first.

Bottom row, the 49 on the left, Timber Bear 849 in the middle, and the Craftsman on the right.

The 46 will get the treatment today.

20240328_075705.jpg

While all of these saws are basically identical, no two have been put together exactly the same and even the fasteners are varied. On the 42, 46, and 49 some of the fasteners require a T20 driver, where all of the fasteners on the Timber Bear 849 and Craftsman were T25. I don't even know where you'd look to find the same screw (diameter, pitch, head type) but different drivers...

There were also differences in the routing of the fuel lines, way the wires were attached, and the way the carburetors were mounted. The Craftsman and Timber Bear 849 had an extra support under the carburetor and used gaskets, the 46 and 49 have no supports and just rely on the rubber boot for sealing.

All but the Craftsman used really poor tubing for the fuel, oil, and impulse lines.

All of the Oregon test saws that I've been through so far have an extra hole drilled in the air filter cover, really makes me wonder what that was about?

This Big 'Ol Tank was dropped off at my house today. Has Compression & Spark, but will take a lot to get it going again. Looks to be mostly complete, 36" bar. Likely a wall hanger for now. 7-55

I make a Diaphragm Kit for that if you ever need one.

I worked on a couple of those cheap plastic "Remington" saws made by MTD back a few yrs.ago.MTD did what they do best - cheapen the hell out of everything. There was nothing that even resembled the original Remington saws except the name.
Ed I have a 650 Mc'brick you can have it did run but I took it apart to make parts, It was mine from years ago. I'll never use it and you enjoy them.

What's the pink ka ka on the bottom of the short-block assy?
McCulloch used some sort of anerobic sealer on the crankcase, etc. in the latter days, evidently it carried over to Jenn Feng. For whatever reason, they sort of "painted" that crankcase cap with the stuff.

The 49cc short block I installed had a lot of squeeze out at the seams. Since it is anerobic, the stuff exposed to the atmosphere never did set up and it was sticky like strawberry jam.

I did get the 46cc model back together, and got started on the Electrolux.

I found this recall while doing some researching of this series of saws. Also I sent you a PM.

Very interesting stuff there old 040.

There was also an EPA case against those models, seems Jenn Feng supplied over 200,000 units that did not meet emissions requirements.

Just to be safe and protect the environment, I'd better leave those models all in the display...

I saw those on eBay, those are great. Yes I will likely need one. Would it be better to buy directly from you on here?
Just use eBay thanks but you can message me here if you want. Or email me at cinci5@gmail.com. eBay doesn't allow email contact.

"The 49cc short block I installed had a lot of squeeze out at the seams. Since it is anerobic, the stuff exposed to the atmosphere never did set up and it was sticky like strawberry jam.-"--sounds about like number 2 Permatex .However even going back to the model A Ford era it will seal .
As far as sealants many things work from Permatex to Loctite 5900 which the later has nearly taken the place of gaskets on modern automobile engines .So IMO it's more of a personal choice what to use .However keep in mind with red loctite or 5900 or number 1 Permatex it's just about like welding parts together .

I've wanted to investigate this one for a long while so I finally made it a priority. The tag simply saws "Electrolux McCulloch 10-51".

A little research shows that Electrolux called it a ProMac 10-51 or alternatively a Partner 5200

It was dirty, and the bare magnesium parts has some corrosion.
