Got the bearings and seals today. Pulled the old bearings off of the crankshaft, polished the the crankshaft, and then bagged it and put it in the freezer.

New bearings should slide right on.

NSK (USA made) part #6203C3 for the crank bearings, and SKF (USA made) part #6640 for the seals.

Have not confirmed that the seals fit for sure yet, but will once I go back out to fit the new bearings on the crankshaft.

BTW how loud they are depends on the muffler .Some are kind of quite .The one on the 805/850 is an early type with the curvature in the bottom .I think I might have pulled one of the baffle plates out .It isn't too bad .However I have a 6-10 right hand start with no baffles and a big carb and advanced timing that will wind out to over 15,000 RPM .It's loud enough to make dogs howl .Plugs and muffs on that one .

I've never heard a quiet Mac. This one does have the reed valve muffler but I think you have to be pretty sharp to notice any difference. I guess they aren't bad. I've run lots that make more noise. Like Al said, when the baffles are out of the muffler they can be painful.

Nice tree there Al!

My 700 is quite a bit louder and nastier sounding than my 800 or 850's. It's about like my 550 or 660. Still, everybody who either cuts with it or watches it loves the American historical part of it, noise especially. Several women have used it and really like it and what the Mac experience represents.

I only speculate that the reed muffler was supposed to do the same thing as a "power valve" muffler on a dirt bike but I'm not certain .One thing I do know is if it rusts shut the saw doesn't run so good

That all makes sense.

I want to get into these Mac's
They look like fun!

This looks like a Super 250.

Apparently has the top cover and starter...... waiting on pictures.

Are these worth chasing as a restore project?

Here is a link to the information on the reed type muffler that Mac submitted to the patent office. Interesting reading but I don't really think it did work all that well at reducing noise.

I may have a chance to snag a 790. What is the concensus of this saw? On par with others of this class?
A 790 is basically old school 6 cube power. Likely a lower cost alternative to a larger saw or gear drive, slower, but still able to get the job done. I would guess it was like the Stihl ms650 vs the 660 or 365 vs 372 Husky.

I had a good running 790 in Tennessee, we shoulda fired it up and run it against your 125; I think they're to close in power to be able tell any difference.
