It is funny that they say it is the 4th time in 17 years these bins have been destroyed. That shows how stupid the media is. They receive extensive damage every year. The bin site was established17 years ago when Butch M was still around. This is probably the 4th total loss. As they said one bin was just replaced two weeks ago from a storm.

Do your kiddos plan to show them in the FFA and 4-H Fair
The conversations have been had but I told them we need to keep them alive for a while and make sure we can do that first.

The first calf arrives tomorrow. A little crossbred heifer calf that they named Annie. Way to go kiddos, name it before it's here so when it dies you won't have any attachment to it whatsoever :roto2lol:

One of the best things a kiddo can do is exhibit livestock and projects.
One of the quickest ways to kill a kiddo's ambition is for them to exhibit livestock and projects.
Two weeks ago I was moving things around and found a tote of archaic milk replacer.........I made smoke out of it

Yes I have a lifetime of real life Bill G stories on it................

Don't know that I can agree with that, at least in my world. Both kids were heavy into 4H showing and were FFA officers all thru high school. One is a large animal vet as well as a 4H volunteer adviser, and the other is just about finished his PHD in Poultry Science.

Most of the calves were black angus X as that is what the family farm had. Daughter did have a big ole female Charolais calf she showed for several years. Cheddar is about 17 now and out of the breeding rotation but allowed to live out her life in the pasture. First in line when a bucket of chop is brought out.
Goats were Boer, and chickens were a mixed bag, mostly RI reds, some Leghorns, some Orpingtons, and Ameraucana. Thank goodness there were no sheep in the mix, those things just seem like they're looking for a place to die!

Did you ever see a kid walk in the ring that clearly had never touched the animal until minutes before?

Yup, several times. You see the parents doing all the pre-show washing and fitting, and leading it to the ring. The kid goes in there and tries to get it to set up and it's like a mini rodeo. Seen a few steers at indoor shows clear the 4 rail ring fence and head out the door to the parking lot. Thankfully none got into traffic or hurt, and the judges were always on top of things enough to help the kid let go before they got hurt.

Point being, at least in our case and most in our immediate circles, the kids did the bulk of the work with the animals and learned how to read an animal's character, as not every animal on the farm has the temperament to be show stock.

A little off topic, but I wish people in Hollywood would recognize this about themselves....

I will never forget the day the county 4-H director
ole Carol Browning came out to take away a kids $14 premium check because the kiddo was old enough to to show but not receive premiums.

Do your county fairs have livestock auctions? Back in the 80's were the hog shows terminal shows?
