I will never forget the day the county 4-H director
ole Carol Browning came out to take away a kids $14 premium check because the kiddo was old enough to to show but not receive premiums.

Do your county fairs have livestock auctions? Back in the 80's were the hog shows terminal shows?
Late response Bill, I missed this one.

At the time our kids were doing the 4H shows, they actually had to join 4H in the next county as ours did not have a very active 4H. Yes on the post-show auctions. Sometimes local businesses would bid pretty high, other times several folks would go together to purchase a steer, goat, lamb or hog so the price / lb could run up wayyyyyy above market price. Good for the kids, good for the 4H program, and also gave incentive for the kids to raise better animals the next year. Best I remember was a +/- 250 # hog that went for $15/lb live weight !

Meet Annie. She’s not a pet or so I’ve been assured.

Sure looks like a pet to me 😂
Patience grasshopper........they always say that and in the end they are pets. Years ago we had one the kids called Maggot. When it was born for whatever reason it decided to try and crawl in a metal culvert. It scraped up its back and the flies and maggots were attacking. We brought it up to the barn to clean it and dress the wounds. It was them a bottle calf. Had it been a heifer we would have bred it but being a bull we cut him and he lived a carefree life here as a pet.

Then we ate him.

Do the kids get to/have to retain the animal? Here they do. There is a market price established ahead of the auction. If that is $0.80 on a hog and it sells for $3.00 then the buyer pays $2.20. The 4-H gets a cut and the kid gets the remainder plus retains ownership. Each kid can only sell one species. Our boys exhibited everything, cattle, hogs, sheep, poultry, and rabbits.

Years ago in the 1980s the hog shows were all terminal shows. That was due to pseudorabies. Every hog that was at the fair went through the auction and was immediately loaded on the semis waiting to take them to the processing plant. If we brought 10 hogs in Monday for the show all 10 had to go through the auction and to the plant on Saturday.

Many years ago the neighbor convinced his wife to do some fieldwork with his new 4440. She was working one of the fields in the bottom where we have drainage ditches. I am not sure what happened to cause it but she put the tractor in the drainage ditch. I knew Jerry for many years and I will bet he never raised his voice or spoke a swear word when he saw it. His only concern would have been if she was OK.

Many years ago a local guy was picking corn with his Deere 6600. Those that were around in the days of the 3300-7700 series know most folks left the unload auger out. He was running with the auger out. He saw a small fire starting. He was close to the buildings so he took off to a hydrant. The problem was he sheered the auger off on a power pole.

He did get the fire put out though

Had a 7700 i never ran it. started running the combine when we got a 7720.

This augers still get torn off every few years around the neighborhood. People forget to put them back.

I am amazed more augers do not get torn off. Guys are running 45ft heads so the augers have to hit the truck.

A number of years ago one of my sons and I went to go look at a small tedder that we had seen on a dealer lot for several years. They had a lot on the east side of town that was not staffed and that is where it was. We looked it over and went into town to there main location to talk with them. I asked about the used tedder on the east lot. The salesman said they did not have any used tedders just a new one. My son and I looked at him in disbelief because it was most certainly used. It turns out they kept letting some folks use it and bring it back. Since they never actually sold it they still called it new and wanted new price. We left.

I would’ve done the same.
