Lucky for me the smokers don't work on my shift because I don't want to be part of that selection.
Working as a welding inspector in a fork-truck factory it was rare to find a welder that did not have a vice or two.............same for felonies.

This happens far more often than you would imagine.
I am well aware. I have tons of stories from over the years but no one likes another damn Bill G story.....

One time (not at band camp) 15 minutes after being officially hired I knew the married boss was banging the hot red head secretary.....she was also married.

He was fired the next year.

If that was at the car dealership I used to work at, they would have made him general manager and the secretary would get promoted to something that pays well with no definable duties.

I believe that.... The boss I was referencing got a better position in another district. I worked with another that only hired the hottest women he could find. A year or so after he retired he was back in my shop and I asked him and he confirmed it.

1/4 & 1/2 million Euro CNC mills set up in what can be described as a pigeon coop.
Both mills are having a "low temperature" error and won't run.
Also "Cooling unit too cold!" 😅

IMG_20260119_064624.jpg

Measures have been taken to warm them up.
2kW electric heater in the belly of the best, and 12kW top gas heater directly from above the machines.

In conclusion, running a CNC mill that had a low temperature safety feature kick in after artificially bypassing the same resulted in ...
Can You guess?!
Excess axis spindle wear and consequent seizure of the same.

I do not know the details yet as I work the PM shift this week, a coworker just texted me that the big DMG $hat its pants about 2.5 hours into the AM/morning shift.

Another doozy, though I can't fault the guys as they seem too young & inexperienced to know all the little & big kinks regarding overhauling decade+ old CNC mills.

The mills are Hurco brand, and I personally prefer them tenfold over DMG.

So again, they are not dumb!
They are lacking the know how and are learning on the job.

They did a complete PCU (control computer) overhaul on our oldest 3-axis Hurco.
All new components, fresh software instal, more IT stuff than mechanical.
Yeah, well somehow they ended up with poorly/incompletely translated Spanish UI language and no other selectable language (the machine runs on Windows XP in the background, UI languages are text files).
The screen below should show a couple dozen selectable languages.
We'd mess with new guys and set anything unreadable as the secondary and switch to it via hotkeys.

For some reason they are also unable to load and/or ammend the machines tooling list (it can be transfered from another Hurco mill via USB).
They left the machine idle like this for three days, we shut it down yesterday at the end of the PM shift.

I know the languages should have loaded with the fresh software instal.
No idea what happened with that.
But it says load language at the top, so it should be possible to read in a separate language file.

As for the tooling list, it takes 5 minutes to extract it from one machine and load into this one.
You don't even have to restart the machine, it is plug & play so to speak.
And, yes - I could do that, I even have a dedicated (private) "work" USB stick with backups of all machine parameters & tooling lists.
NOT MY JOB!
Especially after having maintained these machines for years just to be kicked to the curb and treated like a saboteur.

AGAIN!!!
I am not faulting the service/dealership guys.
But I do fault their employer!

I find it amusing and felt like sharing.

I probably know less about CNC machines than my dog, but I can tell you that I have a CAD computer that is on Windows 7 platform, and had to stop all updates to that machine because the updates were intended for Windows 10 and 11, and were either only partially updating or screwing with the CAD settings in Win 7. Could be something similar if the old girl is running on XP and was updated with newer software / firmware?

.... and yes, a new Win 11 CAD station is on the way...

The old girl features analog Siemens servo drives.
The machine can not run newer Windows nor newer WinMax UI as those are programmed for digital communication.

Although, it is quite possible that the service guys have not been made aware of that and that they are trying workarounds to force the machine into complyance. 🤔

We have newer Hurco mills that are digital, thus the updated softwares work on those.

I prefer the analog mills, they are just as precise yet much less sensitive to outer influences like ambient temperature and induction from other nearby machines.

Cannot disagree with the analog preferences. Again, I cannot speak as to how it is with CNC machining, but in general I find that as the all-digital platforms develop, they seem to lose life-span, and often give less than qualified operators false senses of accuracy. As you've shown in this thread numerous times, just because the digital readout indicates an accuracy in the 100's of thousandths does not mean that accuracy is realized, and many times not needed anyway.
Cheers
