I had a brake job done on my Toyota FJ by a tire shop. I mentioned the leaky axle seal, and afterwards they told me they don't do that. WTF?

I called the Toyota dealer, and for 1 rear axle seal R&R it was over $500. Claimed it was a 3 hour long job. I did it in two, never having done this before, spending a lot of time getting the correct sockets, extensions, and constantly having to get creative with 1/2 to 3/8 socket conversions. And I'm doing much of this on my ass, walking back and forth for a different tool, etc.

I just don't know about dealerships anymore. Seems they are always trying to screw people over.

Now I'm trying to decide if I should do the other side, since the new seal was a 2 pack? Not a fun job!!!

Do the other one now, or do the other one later. You have it figured out now and can probably do it in an hour this time.

And yes, dealerships are a legal scam, imo

I would personally wait. If it isn't leaking I say leave it alone. In my opinion sometime messing with them creates a leak when replacing it is not necessary. I would also make sure the vent is not plugged because that will make seals keep blowing out and you won't get it sealed up no matter how many seals you put in it

I'm going to do the other side in a couple of weeks. I'll watch the completed side, to make sure it no longer leaks. I did it right and trust the problem has been solved, but will wait to make sure.

We have an FJ. On ours I've replaced ball joints, wheel bearings, CV axles and seals, taken the front and rear diffs out to get geared lower and air lockers put in. So on and so on. Ours is raised and we offroad it pretty hard so it goes through front wheel bearings, mostly from being submerged occasionally. Don't hesitate to message me if you get stymied working on yours.

Gotta pay for them fancy shops full of snapon tools somehow. Yeah ridiculous what it cost these days to get shop work done.
Wanna see 500 turned into 5000! Buy a diesel truck and have it worked on!
Those fancy shops do not pay for mechanics tools, the mechanic does. Of course they do pay for high end diagnostic tools.

I'd love to have a shop lift to easily get under the FJ, or any vehicle. As a kid, working on the underside of a vehicle was easy. Damn near impossible at >60 years. Just sitting on my butt to get at things is a PITA. My buttocks and thighs were screaming last night.

I try to do as much of my own work as I can, esp with Toyota (I have a '13 Tacoma). buying OEM parts from the mothership is bad enough.
