Stihl 462s, they're not my cup of tea.

I may be wrong, but I feel messing with the timming on a M Tronic saw will do you no good, A broken key way in a flywheel is not a big deal , just get the flywheel good and clean along with the crank and tighten it down, It will not move . mark it to make sure it doesnt move when you tighten it up.
You may need to put a solenoid in it , that may take care of the resetting issue, then it will most likely rev up higher

I can’t speak for the 462 as I haven’t done one, but the 362 needs a ton of timing advance.

It's an Mtronic. No worries, I don't think I elaborated or detailed if it was carb or mtronic.
Though, The reset never reached a full cycle... so maybe that could be playing its part?
I did the 30-40 second idle with chain brake on, then took brake off WOT... it sputtered like they do... picked up in rpms, you could hear it searching and smoothed out a little... but it never went 13k+ and then dropped rpms... maybe I'm using the wrong reset/calibration???
Usually if the saw won't compete the reset process, the solenoid needs to be replaced.

Good to see you posting these threads Rich.....it's cool seeing someone new learning this stuff.

As time goes on, you'll probably see why us "old timers" do things like we do. Number one for me is that my saws last, second is that it works as well in daily use as a stock saw, third is performance.

The saw has some years on it. I'll replace the solenoid. Thank You.

I'm hooked on these little 2 strokes. I'm starting to wonder if I have an addiction.

Agreed. For me, I want my saws to last and I obviously want the performance. People laugh when I tell them that I did a 461 for a guy, he normally used a 462... he said he increased production approximately 20% when compared to the 462. Knowing his style of cutting, which is aggressive, that 461 was right up his alley as it was built for a 32-36" bar... he cuts with 20-25" bars... he won't use anything else. So.yoy can imagine how it cuts.. He said he'll deal with the additional weight and extra fuel if he doesn't have to cut as long.
The majority of the saws i have built, come from a pile of junked saws that date back over 20yrs. Basically been putting life into the dead... man, I can tell you that working on a new untouched saw seems wrong at this point... ahahaha but, it's so nice to work on a clean/new saw that's where I see the work shine... it's hard to see an old worn put saw perform... I mean, they perform but you just know they would be straight evil if the cylinders, rings and pistons weren't worn.

I haven't noticed much difference... might be a little more throttle sensitive... but, I'm thinking something is up with the saw. I'm going to order a new flywheel and solenoid.
