I have four 034 saws purchased from various sellers over the years, all of which have serial numbers beginning with the number 4.....Three of these saws have a + or x symbol at the beginning of the serial number, the other saw (oldest) has the symbol at the end of the serial number........Anyone know the country of origin ?
I've never seen one start with a 4 ? I've seen 5 & 9

Serial Numbers starting with a 4 indicate the origin of China. The small x on the serial number tag means that this unit was checked (for example for an air leak or something other) after the assembly process.

In the past the large X in front of the serial number had a other meaning. Explanation from the TI bulletin:

When serial numbering was extended to
eight digits in 1981 (see TI 41.81), a ninth internal
reference digit was added at the same time. This
digit prefixes the actual eight-digit serial number
on all chainsaws and power tools.
The reference digit had no relevance in service
documentation at that time and has been generally
shown as an “X” up to now.

Only seen 034 S made in West Germany and in the early 90's made in Virginia Beach. It' nothing to put an 034 S cylinder on a 034 chassis, put some 034 S covers on it and call it an 034 S. Stihl timeline says the 034 S were made in West Germany then transferred to the VB plant in the early 90's. I think they were discontinued a few years later.

The 4 stands for the austrian factory.
I only knew battery/electric Stihl products made there in the Viking assembly halls.

This 041 has a 8 digit serial.
Those digit wont show you where this saw was assembled.

1= germany
2/5 = usa
4 = austria
8 = china
9 = not produced by stihl ;)

Two of the 034's have Tillotson carbs.
The oldest 034 (red master control and front mount chain adjuster) has a Zama carb made in Hong Kong.
The 034 Super has a Zama Carb made in Japan.
