That brings up a couple questions for me. I considered building one like yous but I couldn't get answers from anyone that had this style.

1 How dirty do the logs get?
2 how much resistance is there when pulling?

Juat the very end that drags gets a little dirty. That log is about the max i really pull. I dont have real agressive tires bit sure i could pull more if i did.
I did a big shag hickory last spring about that size. And it pulled it fine. Little spin to get rolling then just dont stop if ya dont have to.
I mostly only pic on 16-18 inch logs and about 10-12 feet long and it pulls then no problem.

I want to build one to use behind the ranger.
Got some ideas.

I havn't tried to take anything big with mine yet. My buddy decided to try it out in the swamp this summer and that didn't end well for him, I tried to to get in and pull it out but ended up stucker that I have ever been with the RZR we had to use come alongs to drag me out inch by inch. Waited until everything froze up good and beat it out of the frozen mud. I have bad some good sized logs on it around the homestead but nothing over 25" yet. All seem good so far.

Mine is not as sophisticated as yours, but it works, and the tires are from HF (cheap)! With mine, you lift the end of the log with the timberjack to get under it. The pivoting angle iron centers the log, so it won't tip going around sharp corners. Just cinch them up with a cargo tie.

I was thinking of doing one with either a winch or a come along, then I thought just having a pivoting lift bar that locks in place after you pull it down (and the wood up) would be cool, and a lot faster.

You want the end of the log to drag. Most of it does not get dirty, and if you go down a steep hill it will not run you over like it would if it was all on wheels. Also helps keep my logging trails clear!

only bad thing about that is it takes weight from the atv or what ever it is being pulled by and youd lose traction

You are absolutely correct. I guess something that would lift it and set it on the trailer would work best. Kinda when you lift up it draws it toward you, then you let it come straight down (the end of the log will not want to push back).

Thanks for the input, I'll keep the wheels turnin.

one way your idea would work is have your hook point in front of the axle and when you load it the log will cam over up then down some and give you the tongue weight your looking for but how far forward would depend on how much tongue weight you want

This is the style I was thinking about building too. In theory the logs may get a little dirtier because when going downhill they slide forward and drop but it keeps from pushing you down hills.
That would be my biggest concern. An ATV only weighs 700 or so pounds. I've had a large load of firewood in the trailer push me around when going down hill.

IMG_0330.JPG Nice winter day to be in the woods and get the kids away from their electronics. Started out as just a day with a fire and ended up dropping 6 trees for next winters firewood. Man I cannot get enough of my 357XP since I ported it. Took down a 24" hard maple and the saw just wanted more:)

OK, your design, above, but with the overhead part just in front of the real axle. Could tilt the trailer vertical, attach the log, then bring the tang down, lifting the log, and when it passes the axle it stays, and puts a little weight on the tang!

Also, tongs instead of just a chain.

Comments welcome!
