Well, this is what I'm doing today. Lost a timing belt on my 98 Mazda 626 daily driver. Could be worse I 'spose. As far as I know this is not an interference engine so a new belt, tensioner, and idler should fix her up.View attachment 147946

Went for a drive after work and asked permission for hunting at a few new spots. Man its getting hard to get permission. Land owners my way hate the out of town people. One will ask then he brings a whole crew with him and just goes bad from ther.
But got a new spot for goose and deer hunting so all good. After his rant about out of towners he even told me where he was seeing the deer lately. Lol.

If it's an interference engine, replacing the timing belt is a waste of time. There will be bent valves. Maybe get a compression checker that does leakdown (the kind you feed compressed air into the cylinder) to make sure you don't have valve leakage but I'd put money on engine damage if it was running when the belt let go.

The hunt was a lot of fun. The three of us got two deer and 4 pigs. I shot a spike buck and a pig with the muzzle loader.

I sighted mine in (again) today, I put a new scope on it. The one that came with it is not very bright, so I replaced it with a Nikon.

I not only use it in Black Powder season, but I use it anywhere rifles are prohibited, I prefer it to the shotgun.

No, but oftentimes the cams won't turn freely and the buckets could be fubared. Everything turns over easily and looks perfect, just no belt to connect things. Parts listings say interference engine, but the consensus on the Mazda forum is that all four bangers of this generation are non-interference. Got a Dayco belt, idler, and tensioner coming from Fleabay. I tried to shop locally but every place wanted 2-3x as much for the same Dayco part numbers. Went ahead and got a new alternator too, it has been getting weak under load.

In my experience, the valves usually get hit by the top of the piston and both the piston and the valve usually look physically ok but the valve is "bent" enough that it won't seal. Valve replacement and a valve job are usually in order. Also, it's possible that not all the valves got bent but just a few. Myself I only change defective parts so if it doesn't run right when you get it back together, do a compression check to see where any damage might be. Hope there isn't any...

I sure will, don't worry. I really haven't seen too many valve/piston collisions as all the Toyota belt motors I dealt with were non-interference. Have seen a few spectacular failures from valve springs and retainers suddenly letting go.

Started work on a customer's 066 Round Top. Dealing with the customer "2nd hand". Need a new tank handle, told the customer loves how it runs, but wants me to make it a little stronger.

I guess he does like it, he is running a 8 pin on a 36" bar with full comp chain! (and he is a tree pro)

I'm going to replace the tank handle and just do some minor mods, don't want to mess much with a saw that already runs strong. Did a muff mod to it today, and pulled the limiters from the carb. That should wake it up a bit!

I also played a bit with a Asian 440 BB I recently built. I did some port work to it and was really looking forward to a strong saw, but it does not seem to be running right. My next door neighbor heard the exact same thing I did. Said it did not sound like one of my saws. I cut the flywheel key .025 during the build, but I think I going to move it back to a full key. The saw sounds like it is fighting itself, even if you lean the carb, the revs won't PU, and it is not strong in the wood.

I'm thinking the timing on these Asian saws may be all over the place, and it sounds like it has too much timing advance. I talked with my neighbor about it, and he thinks the same thing, so we will see what happens. Heck, I may need to move it in the opposite direction! Will keep you posted if this helps.

I wish you the best! All the V6 Nissan trucks I have owned have been interference engines so I am meticulous about the 60k replacement interval. I've done 4, getting pretty good at it haha.

Embarrassing update, pulled the plug to insert the piston stop (to remove the flywheel) and noticed the plug was very wet. Re checked the tune, and the Hi was open over 2 full turns, no wonder it ran like that! Not sure how it happened, I always check the tune on the carbs before I install them … but that is what I found. Did not get to put it in wood, but it sounds a lot better now! I guess I should have put this together when I noticed the other day it was running a little smoky!
