Ya I was just curious how much adjustment there was on the 450 on the machine itself…I know you can dress the wheel to get whatever profile you want, I just didn’t know if it had any adjustments on the machine itself
If there are. I can't figure them out. I got new dressers and the chain holder from Madsens. I can't figure out how to make the thing work.

Appreciate the info!!!

From what I have seen looking at pics of both, the 451 has the adjustment where you can move the “part that holds the chain”, forward or backward more…which from what I can see would give the option to make a more or less aggressive tooth….

Don’t happen to have a pic of a tooth you sharpened with the 450 by chance??
The slide in and out only changes the side plate sharpness. The down angle of your top plate is going to make a bigger difference in how long it stays sharp and how fast it cuts. Raising the arm or lowering the wheel allows you to make a more blunt longer lasting cutter

I know that’s a 451 I’m just using th photo so you guys can see what I am talking about…

Does it change the tooth profile if you spin that forward or backwards, or does it not change the profile regardless of where that is holding the chain????
no its a circle. it doesnt change anythin to spin it except for the groove thickness. one side is for .050 chain and the other is for .063 on the later models. the 450 may not have the groove for the .050.

So you can raise or lower the arm with an adjustment or do you have to shim it??

Ok I didn’t know if you just moved it forward or back a little if it would change the angles to more/less aggressive….i wish I knew someone close that had one lol I’m in Indiana and don’t know anyone whom has one!!

The 450 doesn’t have the up/down adjustment in the arm like the 451C does. But shimming the wheel down is no different than raising the cutter up, so it’s still possible to have some adjustment

I’m gonna try that.
IF anyone tried that.. it can be very finicky and repeatability can be challenging. What I learned to do is to clean the back side of the chain holder really well and when I get it positioned where I like it, then scribe a line on the backside (of the holder) with a fine tip sharpie. Then if I rotate to the other side (50-63), I can get right back to where it was. I’ve considered scratching lines with a metal scribe but haven’t had the need to yet.

I can’t speak for anyone else, but I am a set and forget guy big time. I have something that works equally well for 3/8 & .325
I just keep the edge of my wheel thin enough to do a full side plate on .325 and accept a minor shelf on 3/8. The side plate only has to be as deep as your raker setting, but I’m a moar is better guy too.
