Thanks for the info Mike. There are 3 more there that are splintered about 8 feet off the ground. I am afraid to cut it. Afraid of barbershop chair. I told her to let mother nature takem down. Call.me when their down. Lol

I have encountered Black Locust that did that (sand in soil). Toughest wood I ever cut. Green, it was OK, but the next day sparks would come off your chain, and I had to touch it up every 2 or 3 cuts. I have cut dead, dry Black Locust many times since w/o encountering the same issues.

I know from doing my cabin that dead dry Ash is twice as hard to drill as dead dry Black Cherry.

Ash has some strange attributes, a hard wood with good BTUs that will almost burn green, very hard but light, but will go punky easily if not stored dry. Known for being used in Baseball Bats and shovel handles (and my Cabin).

Always be careful when dropping a dead one. Sometimes they are so punky (and don't look it) that you will just touch it with a saw and it will fall, like with no hinge. If it is dead, and near anything important, rope it.
I had an ash in my front yard that was about dead. Went to pull it away from the house it just came right on over with the winch.

Yes, plenty. The wood just gets that dark dust on the plate. It was a 20" bar on the 460.
And I drilled the oil holes out in the bar.

Here is a picture of it too.

It's a vaughan, built in Portland Oregon around the late 20s. Single cylinder, 2 stroke, water cooled, originally had a Wico mag but has been converted to timer and buzz coil. Grease cups on most of the bearings, at first it was being reluctant to run, it was sucking air around the main bearings because we didn't crank the grease cups down.
