Lol. Thanks.
I put a 20" bar on the 460 and noodled it into quarters. Lol
Only way I could move them out.

I split a piece and it was straight grained. I assumed it was white oak. It's all white inside. Could be Ash. Makes sense. Lol
Maybe I sniffed to much fumes.
That is ash my friend. Can see the borer lines under bark in your picture. I can tell by the bark and wood color/pattern too.

OK. Good. [emoji106] I really do not cut much Ash at all. Lol
But I will now save a piece or 2 for some handles in the future.
I am good at cutting, not at determining what wood it is. Lol
Wood was like marble, I can tell you that. I had to touch up chain every time I refueled.

When it’s been dead/dry for quite some time it gets almost petrified. Very hard on a saw/chain. Dusty too. Green is much easier to cut.

This all explains why my chain was a little brownish and not clear metal like when I cut green wood.
Dead dry ash soaks up all the bar oil off chain cutting it I noticed. Your oiler was probably at limit of what it could handle if the chain was dry looking like that.

It does if it was killed before the borer beetle got to it. But anything that gets killed by the beetle starts to go punky pretty quickly

I know from doing my cabin that dead dry Ash is twice as hard to drill as dead dry Black Cherry.

Ash has some strange attributes, a hard wood with good BTUs that will almost burn green, very hard but light, but will go punky easily if not stored dry. Known for being used in Baseball Bats and shovel handles (and my Cabin).

Always be careful when dropping a dead one. Sometimes they are so punky (and don't look it) that you will just touch it with a saw and it will fall, like with no hinge. If it is dead, and near anything important, rope it.
