I like the rollers. My worn one with a smaller file will produce hook (lower file height) and a new one with 7/32” will produce more of a stay-sharp chain. I just bought two recently because pantano had them for sale for about $11.

I do want to try a fast filer now…but I have a grinder on the way.

I think the roller is a good way to learn freehand.
I touch up free hand in the field, and true every loop with Archer FastFiler guides at home enjoying music and a beer slow and steady.

Time and aggravation saving tip:
- always carry a new sharp file with You in the field, touch ups will be so much faster and easier.

Archer FastFiler 24" 84DL Windsor full chisel full comp chain and Oregon ProAm bar did great this afternoon!
I dismantled a wind blown airborne/hung up 28+" oak today.
My Dolmar PS-7310 did all the work.
I forgot to take pictures, just wanted the crappy job done - but the person I did the job for took pictures, I will try and get them when I return to take down and dismantle three more 20ish" oak trees.

I am bad about this and not just in the field

I will use a file way past it’s usable life while I have a dozen new ones sitting there waiting to get used

I’m “saving them”

Not sure what I’m saving them for

I have lost it, thrown a file across the shop because it sucked, picked it up and started hacking away again

Moron…

Yesterday I filed two ground 84DL full chisel chains, one full comp one full skip - with a dull file!
I would have spent half the time filing those loops had I utilized a new/sharp file.

But, I didn't wanna ruin a new file on the grind hardened cutters!

Yup, that’s me…

I won’t use a new file on a rocked chain where I probably need it most

Or a chain with a few random HARD cutters (Archer)

I get that way with the consumables I use in my hobbies

Not sure why

I used to make knives out of old files when I had access to the stuffs in my dad’s garage

That was always hit or miss with my patented “looks good to me” heat treatment process

No, I am still fighting those same 2 loops of Archer from the spring of 2020

5-6 super hard cutters between the 2 loops and a file won't touch them so when I hit one out comes the diamond file

It has come down to them or me, last man standing, and I won't give up...

Actually, all I am doing right now is trying to keep myself entertained and this is helping

Did You ever give it thought to purchase a small battery powered dremel type/straight shaft grinder to handle those pesky hardened cutters?
Just a thought. ;)

Yeah, that’s one of the many many tools I already have back in Alaska

All that stuff is in storage after we sold our house to our son

We haven’t decided yet if we will buy another house there so everything is kind of just frozen for now

There are so many tools and pieces of equipment up there that I might end up shipping down to Hawaii so I am holding off buying duplicates

Besides it’s just 2 chains at this point

I got plenty of Carlton and Oregon chains to run

Like I said, it’s turned into a friendly rivalry at this point

I honestly wish there was someone local with a grinder that I could take them to and watch them sharpen them

I really want to see if hitting those hard cutters would make a noticeable difference as they worked around the chain

I thought at some point it was a matter of just getting through excess chrome or case hardening or something and they would be able to be filed but that’s not been the case

I still think they got hardened but somehow missed the annealing process

Its all good

Cheap entertainment

Today's exercise in futility...
Trying to sharpen on a tailgate with my dominant hand side shoulder still recovering
I am a big believer in stump / filing vises: keep the chain from moving, and let the user keep both hands on the file for smooth cutting.

We discussed a lot of options for tailgate filing, or using a receiver hitch to hold a vise, on A.S. Simple solutions were modifying a cheap stump vise to mount on a board that gets clamped / secured to the truck in some way.

I agree 100%

Just trying to figure out what it is I need to do without duplicating gear I already have stored in Alaska

Cover postage and I will grind a couple of loops for you. Mark any 'problem teeth' with twisty ties.
Send me a PM if interested.

Philbert

You have kindly made this offer in the past and I’m about to the point of taking you up on it

I will PM you kind sir
