A good case half would be my no.1 pick.
I have spoken to the owner and he is going to raid the saw parts bin at the local saw mill to see what he can find

Buy the case half.

You'll have to fully disassemble for the weld, and even if your buddy has a Tig, it needs to be an AC unit and he will need to have Mag filler rods which costs $125 a pound if you're lucky.

By the time you're done, it will probably cost more to weld it.

If it was my saw it would be paid for by now but I will have to wait to hear back from both Bryan on postage costs and the owner of the saw to see if he wants to go that way.

Tony,

Having a hard time following this thread. I thought you bought the saw.

You guys have some advanced welding systems down under. Fronius. For all I know, it can be mig welded.

No mate, I will be rebuilding it for him.
He told me it had a hole in the oil tank of the case so I started doing some looking into repair options or finding another case half

I must agree with you the crazy prices that you have there in the US is worth more to buy a new saw than to repair the old

Update on the Stihl case that was welded. He was barely able to get the weld to stick IDK whats in there but it is barely weldable. Keep in mind it a a Stihl other manufacturers may use different alloys.

Im betting the above post about weld not sticking is due to oil absorption
Welder said it was from the mix of metal he said pot metal. I seen him weld a cam sensor flange for me and it had oil coming out of it until like the fourth try finally it dried up and it worked this stuff wont work on that saw.

I just paid for the case half.

A massive thankyou must go to @bplust for looking after me.

Both owner and builder and excited about this one.

I am thinking I will give it a bit of "free of charge cause I am learning and practicing" port work.
I want to keep it mild, just a mild touch up.

Thinking keeping a gasket as its a full time work saw, but sand the base to get squish down to .020
check timings and fix if needed.
Slight widening of exhaust and intake, smooth lowers out, muffler mod etc.

Will start a thread when I get it here
