if the reference point is against the oiler, then all that remains is to place the crank lobes in the right spot. at least for the purposes of the china saw, centered did not give enough ... length. for stock 044/440's if you put the crank on center and its fine, then I'll just chalk this up to it being a china saw and a fluke lol.

There should be enough play within the crank itself (needle bearings) to compensate for any discrepancy... without improper stresses. Right? Lol. Well, you'll find out I guess.

What do you use if the oiler is plastic, like an 026?
Won't the oiler melt from heating the case?
There was a 'metal based' oiler for this model as well. (But I understand your quandry). I keep one around for assembly purposes. Got mine of flea bay.
Or you can use the MS260 oiler also -- works the same. I've used either one.

I have a metal pump from an 026 pro that I use.

I guess I need to make up a spacer out of steel that I can use instead of the plastic pump.
Or can I put the bearing on the crank first then put that side of the case on last?

I'd want to start on the PTO side with a positive stop. Maybe ask in the swap meet thread about a metal pump?

Ok- I still have extras left over from a truck load of 440s I bought from Greyback Forestry five years ago.

Have you got enough smalls to build a saw? I'm thinking about a Asian case, tank, covers, etc....with OEM guts.

Probably so. Most of the crankcases on these got smashed to smithereens as they were thinning and fire crew saws but the smalls seem good. I'll round up some stuff next weekend.

So not as to muddy the waters more I'm gonna poast up a fresh new "bearing depth setting" thread.

Continue on with 044 build thread Randy...

Great idea, add the info here, or post a link. I'm waiting on parts for this build anyway.
