I suggest a shrink fit. As in, shaft in dry ice and your 'cheek' at 400 plus oven.

Not knowing your diameter but neighborhood of .0015" interfearence.

I routinely press bearings on with a 0.0015 shrink fit. 2-3 thou interference for short distances is totally doable with an arbor press, and I regularly machine parts for that. The only time we needed dry ice and heat was a 3" shaft being pressed 12" into an impeller with 0.004" interference.

I'm hoping so.

I'm getting busier and busier. We really want to do one, Lisa and the kids have a great time.

I'm just worried about getting the wood....

I hear you there. I know it's a huge amount of work and time to get things ready.

Keep us posted. If you do have one, let me know if you need any Canadian pharmacy stuff and I can deliver if Trump will let me into the country.

The shaft wiped out the thrust washer and then the bearing. The PTO side bearing seems fine.
I'm planning on you running it at Geniusfest. I want to see how it does against that 5200 of yours. I like that saw.

I may not bring the 5200. I will likely bring my new toy that you see in my avatar. Basically the same engine but it has 185 psi comp vs 150 on the 5200. It's heavier due to the larger fuel tank they put on it.
Very much looking forward to running the beast if you get it back together. What's the no load speed on the engine?

Don't feel obligated to host a GTG just because you have in the past. It's a helluva lot of work. Geniusfest or not, Tim will get a chance to run the 3400.

I'm leaning towards a shrink fit instead of a press fit. The cheek bores scored during assembly with less than 2-3 thou interference. If my math is correct(it probably isn't), with a 700 degree temp spread, I gain .0039" in clearance. Allowing for .001" assembly clearance, I can have .0029" shrink fit.
Cheeks are in the oven right now. Gonna heat them and measure difference in the bore. When it comes time to assemble, I won't have any time for error working with liquid nitrogen.

I haven't put a tach on it. I would guess 13k

How far away from the boarder are you again Tim?

Here shortly we are taking a trip across the boarder to pick up some Epi-Pens. I need them before summer starts.

About 3 hours from Port Huron (170 mi), a little less than 4 hours from Detroit (220 mi)

The stepped shaft moved outward. It was pressed in flush originally. The thrust washer was stuck on the step and the copper filings between the crank and the tw. The step on the shaft came into contact with the bearing and created heat. The thrust surface of the cheek is fine.
What's your point Dave?

Pay no attention to Dave.
His head is still stuck in the chimpanzee enclosure.
