I believe I saw Niko say that for a while they were made with the se on the starter and XP on the top at the same time.
They got the bigger carb in 85-06, XP decal on top cover 86-01 and finaly XP decal on start cover in 86-12.
I went through this to figure out when my 266 was made, eventually I figured out it was made late 86 or early 87 due all those things + crankshaft number

I believe they were for a short time...Tor listed more or less when this was happening . As I'm learning from Niko, there is a bit of a grey aria in the IPL dates ...I believe I saw Niko say that for a while they were made with the se on the starter and XP on the top at the same time.
Thats the changes I found as well...the bigger carb with XP is a help in dating ...as long as its not a SE with the 2 things changed . ..Then like you with crank numbers , a bit more digging is needed.
I was always of the opinion the SE and XP were different as the RPM's that are not rated the same as likely due to the carb ...but it was put by someone on another forum i belong to , that they were "ALL " the same SE or XP . I don't mean ST by the way !!

my favorite is the 281 husqvarna minus a pinched bar and aggressive chain.
Out of interest and if you don't mind saying.....do you have a lot of paperwork issued to the dealer network as well as access to the electronic database material issued to dealers as well?Yes, each new IPL usually sums up the changes made since the last one - but of course there are exceptions from that as well, like if there was a large stock at hand of the old part. More detailed info was available to dealers, in the Service Bulletins.
In some cases it also matters that IPLs are about replacement (spare) parts, and not necessarily about what was/is in the production saws. As an exemple, some saws in this "family" came with (similar size) Walbro carbs, but it always was the Tilly carbs that was listed in the IPLs. The policy regarding such details have of course changed over time.

Your tag as "Information Collector" would suggest a serious library of information as a interest or profession .
I tend to use Barrett's (Small Engines) IPL and Tor put me onto "Parts Tree" and have IPL pages saved for common saws i work on...Both have been Very helpful in tracking down parts so I'm ready to quote numbers to my suppliers who have all the Husq dealer information. Ordering parts is "dead time " money wise mostly.I once had such an access to the Husky and Jonsered stuff, but it wasn't "legit", and I lost it when they changed the passwords to something less obvious. In retrospect it is a pity that I didn't copy and save more than I did (service bulletins that is, the IPLs are still available both at the brand website (not in all nations, and which ones varies)) and elsewhere. The Husky library goes back to 1972 or so, and the Jonsered one to the late 1980s (+/-), when Husky took full control of the production.
A lot of information does of course turn up trough different forums, and some times Google is useful.

Don't worry...your secret of "international espionage" is safe

I'm big fan of parts tree, probleby learned more there compared to study IPL's, why I got one 50 and 55, figured out I could use several parts from them to 254/262 thanks to parts tree.+1 on parts tree! They are also helpful when you look up the part that your looking for. Once you open the next page it tells you what other saw's it came on. It's alot easier to ask for parts for lets say a L65 then a 2100/298/2101.
