All this 42 242 talk made me run down to dads and grab his to see why cylinder it has. It appears to be Mahle. I have tried to trade buy and steal this saw from him but he will not part with it. He bought it about 20 years ago from a guy for 200 bucks. It has never failed and continues to saw great. I believe it is a 93 model and not sure what week.

Love this saw. 288xp + cajones.

Elect (joe) worked it over. Jon the bar czar hooked me up with the sugi. It's no longer this pretty. Even if I don't need a big saw, I find way to run it.
Love that old school Sugi bar. Would look so good on my 2186.

The 262 is the only saw iv ever bought brand new.... These two are now becoming much harder to pick up in the UK.View attachment 9540
both are nice looking saws.
262 is very difficult to find in Southern Norway, wasnt to many sold here, and those who have them doesnt sell them, I always hope that I will find one mint 262xpg.
254 is different, there is lot of them and now and then nice examples also, probleby the most sold 2xx here.

I find the spares are somewhat hit and mis…getting the correct brake band for a 254 was a pain ! ended up with one for a 242 that I was assured was the correct one for the 254. Part numbers are essential i find so fortunate to have a IPL as a reference . Do you have a good spairs network ?

yes, most times I check this site as reference:
https://www.partstree.com/parts/husqvarna/saws-chainsaw/
Just remember, what is NLA in US is not always NLA on Europe

Edit, if there is updated part number the new part number is always in a purple box

Oh you know that,s bad to the bone[emoji2]

It was a real eye opener to me. Srcarr welded the muffler bolt holes and re tapped em. Then just because he's a great guy, he ported it. And made a dual port muffler. Thing rips. When I first got it, my back was messed up. I thought I'd never pick it up again. But I got straightened out and am very strong. Last 3 years it's seen some action but getting less because of my love of the 288xp. There ain't much the 288 can't handle that I'd ever deal with anymore.

Now if I only had a 4.5' willow tree again......

I am no expert, but this has been discussed before, on different saw forums.

As far as I "read" it, there is no difference between the 42 and the 42 Special, it is just about marketing/decales and time - and closed port cylinders isn't a standard feature of the model.
If a 42 Special has one, it is most likely that the saw got that cylinder later - but such substitution (with the "lesser" models) does happen at saw factories, when parts are out of inventory.
Hi ST
Think one difference that seems to be a consistent between 42 and 42 special is in the adjustable delivery oil pump. 42 fixed..42 sp adjustable...The ones I've worked on fit that mainly .

you can more question what's the difference between 42 special vs 42.
On early 42 special, had Gilardoni/Mahle closed port cylinder, that said, I've never seen them, rumors.
Later, from 94 or so, IPL show 42 special and 246, no 42. I have one 97 model, Gilardoni 241A open port jug.

42 had Gilardoni 7 and 241A, open port cylinder.
242 have Mahle 42ZN13, closed port cylinder,

I would like to see serial tags on peoples 42 special + what marking the cylinder have.
How about this one then Tor R.
Off that scored up 42 sp i put on "whats on the bench"
A small..2r.. seem to be the last digits on top line.

non adjustable oil pump was used on 133/234/238 firsdt versions. Adjustable oil pump came on 238 in 1986.
I've three 42's, 88 week 51, 90 week 46, 97 week 01, all three have adjustable oil pump.
Thats said, Husky is famous for using up old stock, wouldnt surprise me at all if you find non adjustable oil pumps on 42.

Looks like iv fallen for the assumption that if you find something on some Husqvarna's, then they all are like it :D
