One ring vs two

What if a guy was to put a slight bevel on the corners of the bottom ring with a buffing wheel. And maybe just touch the outside of it.

We could just put both new rings on it but Where's the fun in that.

Use a shot one in the bottom land instead of leaving a empty spot. It might seal some but squeeze less on the cylinder.

Could also heat a ring with a torch,take the tension right out of it.

I think a loose ring would snag easier

sure a snag wouldn't catch a loose ring easier?there is a slight difference there.

Most smaller bores have a bore every mm or half mm. By the time you got to 52mm I think you could get one 2mm smaller.

But I doubt you could put a 2mm smaller ring on without breaking it.

Anybody ever put a really wore out ring under a new one?

I've done that on my own saws- not a completely worn out bottom ring, but just a good used one that would provide less friction than a new one.

1. Is there an advantage of removing the bottom or top ring ?
2. What gains would I expect to see if I removed one of the two rings ?
3. Is there any truth to the "rumor" that removing the lower ring results in a dry bottom end ?
4. What losses should I expect to have with the lower ring removed ?

You question(s) could be answered by looking at a Diesel engines' pistons and rings.

A diesel generally has the combustion chamber in the piston, I've wondered how this would work I a saw. Probably not well
