The .120 is probably more than strong enough...and it's easier for me to machine for sure. I'll call around when I run out if this batch.

Well after a couple minutes of searching unless your ok with .120 wall thickness I don't think it's economical to buy the .250 wall stuff unless you can get it direct from the supplier. Your design is hitting a wall for off the shelf availability, amount of material used, number of steps and times it's handled vs what you can sell for. Just my outside looking in thought.

ok, so looking at onlinemetals.com ... they have both the .750ID stuff - and it would cost for a 6.5" piece about $5 .... not bad...not great. whatever.

for .625" ID x .25" wall, its about $30 per piece.

??????????????????

I trust .75" ID is much more common, but a 6x markup for an uncommon size? really?

Give them a call Matt. Not sure what lengths you need, but maybe they have new scraps in those short lengths that you could work out a deal on?????

Just thinking outside the box a little.

The reason it's more expensive is they are doing the machining for you. Not all sizes of tube under the sun are extruded when they make tube, and 5/8 ID / 0.25" wall is just one of those likely that to create you need to machine a different size. You're paying for the extra material and the tooling work and the price reflects that for people that don't have the ability to turn a piece to dimension.

But the issue isn't even an issue. The hot-dip zinc coating isn't as thick as the galvanized coating. As long as you don't use galvanized threaded rod, the zinc coated rod will slide through the sleeves no problem, even is they are machined with short, stubby drill bits drilled from both sides in non-concentric bores. Don't get your panties in a bunch. [emoji23]

I just hate doing the machining. No point in me drilling non concentric holes if I don't have to.

Ill call them....with panties tied tight

Something has gone awry with this thread. The saga of belated shipments, material sourcing and specs has degenerated to one white male with panties????? :nono: :number_one::nusenuse: :nut:

how long are these new sleeves? A design change or switching to steel would be a huge savings. If corners are properly chamfered and smoothed there isn't any risk of hurting a case with a steel sleeve.

Just throwing it out there. My shop does repair, R&D, and small production runs. Just a usual day in a fab/machine job shop. If you happen to look for outsourcing it all.

Perhaps you could do these then -- Mr. Twin?
Not a lot of intensive machining from what I have seen. :)

I'm gonna call some metal places on Monday. ...then possibly I'll contact twin. The sleeves aren't too bad for me to do as long as they have a good start.

Some updates, and more disappointment (I have my serious hat on...)

Ok... I have run out of large sleeves, and have reordered this AM from speedy metals. No biggie, those will be available by the end of the week and I'll be shipping again monday to those that have paid (there is only one that I haven't shipped yet... the rest of you guys have had your stuff shipped out).

To those guys that have bought the kits, thank you so much for all the interest! I really hope you enjoy them as much as I have .... I really like putting cases together now!! remember, when using the small sleeves, seat the sleeve first, then put the rod in, screw down the rod, and then thread in the handle. DO A DRY RUN, please make sure these rods are fully cleaned and the threads are fine before using them.... in my haste to get things out to people these kits could use a good wipe down .... the handles may not have ideal threads, so make sure that these do thread in ... dry run before you try to assemble a case.

packing materials... I'll apologize for the wonky packing materials ... had to clean out my basement and this project has helped! they should all arrive in 1 piece. ...let me know if there are any issues or questions.

DISAPPOINTMENT.... this is a tough topic but I'll do my best. I have 20 people on the original list for these gen 2 kits, and around 40 on the backup list....making around 60 commitments to buy kits. I have contacted everyone on the list, and have sold less than 20 kits. In fact, less that HALF of the original 20 even emailed me back. For those guys that have passed this go around and let me know... I totally get it. I really do. For those guys that have paid...thank you. BUT.... Fred and I have tooled up for making kits according to the commitments I have received. I have fronted all the money for these kits.

Based on the (bulk) lack of response to my emails, I'll simply say this. The aggravation value here is insane. So, once the kits that I currently have are gone, two things will happen. Prices will go up, and it will be money up front. I've desperately tried to do this as a favor to all the guys that are interested, and the result is lackluster. I will be making these in small batches going forward, possibly only 10 at a time. If any other sourcing options pop up I'll let everyone know.

If anyone wants a kit, please let me know. We are now on FIRST COME FIRST SERVED basis.
